Advocacy – Who Needs It?: Case Study 1

If you as a parent with a disability are having difficulties getting what you need, an advocate may help.

Mandy is a young woman aged 26. She is married with a newborn baby. Mandy has a physical disability which makes it very difficult and unsafe for her to bathe her baby. She rings her local council service for help but they say they don’t provide such a service. She gets an advocate who speaks and negotiates with the manager of the council homecare services for Mandy to get one hour of support each weekday morning to assist her with the baby. On the weekends, her husband is home and able to help. Mandy now feels a lot more secure and confident as a mother.
