Parenting support
There are numerous community agencies which offer primary parenting support services which include direct assistance with parenting skills, information on child development, and are particularly supportive of mothers-to-be, and new mothers in assisting with pre-and post-natal issues such as nutrition, feeding, immunisation, and household management. Some of these agencies offer assistance through several branch locations throughout the Western Region, such as the Maternal and Child Health Services.
Maternal and Child Health Services
All parents of newborn babies will receive a visit from the Maternal and Child Health Nurse soon after the baby arrives home. The service is for children from birth to six years. The nurse helps you and your baby with issues such as bottle and breast-feeding, child development, child safety, nutrition, toddler behaviour, toiletting and advice on family planning, child illness, immunisation information and postnatal depression. As a parent with additional needs you are entitled to have the nurse visit you at home instead of visiting the Maternal and Child Health Centre and you should also request more frequent visits if you need extra help with parenting strategies. Refer to Health Section for a listing in the Western Region.
