Oakleigh Technical School Cadets On Parade in 1956  Leader Lt. HW Maynard

A Cadet unit was established in 1949 at Oakleigh Technical School which was popular until the time of the Vietnam war after which only few schools continued cadet activities thereafter.

All training of the school's cadet unit were the responsibility of A.R.A. 21st. Battalion who saw that all activities conformed to Army regulations and requirements.

To enrol as a Cadet a boy must have been in the third form, be 14 years of age, a minimum of 4 ft 9 in ( 1.45 m approx) in height also with consent forms being signed.

Lt.H.W.Maynard (Band training Officer) made himself available at every opportunity to supervise band work. Plenty of  practice produced a band which represented the school on many occasions. Inter school band competitions were won every year coming second only once in eleven years of competing.
