George Hunter was the principal of OTS from 1963 until his death in 1973 |
During that time with the help of the staff, students and a very active Mothers Club, the school blossomed. The school increased in size to its maximum development. Growth in student numbers with full time boys apprentices and night school students exceeded 700

One of the major achievements of the time was the construction of the assembly hall.
The hall became the focal hub of the school.
On 28th. of August 1964 boys witnessed a ceremony where Mr. Hunter called senior prefect Paul Baker to present Mr FH Nicholls with an inscribed spade with which to turn the first sod for the new assembly hall. |

At last the work begins with the foundations of the new hall. The hall was eventually equipped with a full range of athletics gear, basketball courts, a full set of stage lights for drama performances. |

George Hunter and Peter Haines made the idea of a Television Studio for Oakleigh Technical School a reality. In the background is the brick building constructed without windows. Another building constructed was a new multi storey Library and Science wing. |

Inside the new building students became actors, directors and cameramen for TV. The cost was $33,000 with a further $12,000 for the equipment. The Education Department gave a grant of $8000 and the rest was raised by parents. |
