Learn English by Theme (Topic)

A good way to practise English is to read about a single "theme", such as 'public transport', 'discrimination', or 'smoking'. New words can be easier to remember if you learn them around a theme.

On the web

There are some English-learning sites that look at a single theme.

English at the Beach is a site made in Melbourne, which has a range of stories on the theme of the beach. It's a lot of fun, and interesting reading.

Opinion Surveys in English are an interesting way to learn. This group, from Brazil, is studying different ways to measure people's opinions, on a range of topics. Worth a look!!

Reading about the Olympics, from a group in Illinois, United States of America.

Health - at the Doctor - is a site based in the USA, with dialogues, word-search puzzles, and other ideas for learning.

On CD, not the web

"Issues in English" is a language-learning program that many adult schools have on their computers. This program organises its stories by themes such as the environment, public transport and smoking.
