New words from reading the news

Three stories have recently hit the news in Australia:
  • the nursing home which was forced to close;
  • the proposal to allow safe injecting rooms for heroin addicts, and
  • the shooting of a six-year-old girl by a six-year-old boy in the USA.

Evacuated: verb; Meaning: moved to a safe place; Example: The people were evacuated to another house.

Foul: Part of speech: Adjective Meaning: bad. Example: If you go to The North Pole, you find foul weather over there.

Herald sun, noun. Meaning: News Paper Example: We read many things from the paper.

Horrendous: adjective; Meaning: very unpleasant; Example: It was an horrendous experience for the residents.

Illegal (adjective) Meaning: unlawful; Example: It is illegal to bring in drugs into the country.

Impoverish, verb. Meaning: to cause (a person) to become poor. Example: Poker machines can impoverish people.

Kerosene, noun. Meaning: an oil used in lamps. Example: I have bought a gallon of kerosene from the shop.

Leap year, noun. Example: A leap year comes after every four year.

Lipstick, noun. Meaning: cosmetic material for colouring the lips. Example: The thing women always use for lips.

Mandatory, adjective. Meaning: compulsory. Example: UN to probe mandatory sentencing laws. (UN: United Nations).

Pluck: verb. Meaning: pluck somebody to take hold of and pull something eg. If children are drowning in the pool, rescuers pluck them from water.

Procession, noun; Meaning: people moving in a line. Example: A procession of animals went around the ring in the circus

Proprietor, noun. Meaning: an owner. Example: Michael is the proprietor of this shop.

Reckons: verb; Meaning: consider; regard; Example: He reckons they are very good teachers.

Refugee: noun; Meaning: a person forced to leave his house or country because of danger from war or flood.

Revamp, verb. Meaning: rework, amend, overhaul, redraft, revise, reconsider, correct, edit, and work out. Example: I prefer more dustbins to keep the place clean and improve the environment it keeps us healthy.

Revoked, verb. Meaning: cancel/withdraw. Example: Bronwyn Bishop has revoked the Aged care provider status of the proprietor.

Scott and Lachlan Drummond, noun. Meaning: Name. Example: Boys Name.

St, Vincent's Hospital, Noun. Example: Hospital's name.

Suspicious, adjective. Meaning: doubtful. Example: I was very suspicious of coming to Melbourne.

Tormented, noun; Meaning: troubled; Example: The man was tormented by his son's behaviour.
