IMAGINARY SPACE TRAVEL -AN INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION
ABOUT THE PROJECT | NON-LINEAR STORY STRUCTURE | PROJECT STRUCTURE | TIME LINE | EXPERIMENTAL INTERFACE RESEARCH | RESOURCES | SOFTWARE | ++ NON LINEAR STORY STRUCTURE RESEARCH ++ Unlike the standard linear stories we are all used to in most films, plays and books. A non-linear story does not have a set defined start, middle or end. In its rawest form, a non linear story is just a mess, it has no set structure, no set characters or locations, not even a set theme or motive. To treat a non linear story the way we treat linear stories would be absolutely pointless, it is a story that relies on you for guidance, like a semiconscious dream, or a cross country drive, you interactively control the content and direction of your experience. The internet is the best example of a raw non-linear story that you interact, navigate and create in. Once we add structure to the non-linearity of a raw interactive experience, we can create for ourselves a container of a certain theme or concept we wish to explore. Computer games for example allow you to chose a number of different paths, and present you with many challenges, with clearly defined characters and circumstances. The fundamental dilemma of interactive, non-linear story telling is one of narrative structure. By the definition of interactivity (control and response), the traditional concept of linear narrative cannot operate within the interactive story. Linearity is defined as "a clear motivation of a series of causes and effects that progress without significant digressions, delays or irrelevant actions." The biggest challenge in creating interactive entertainment is that interactive entertainment can be structured to remove this "series of causes and events", and allow for any number of "digressions" and irrelevant actions. ++ EXAMPLES OF NON-LINEAR NARRATIVE ++ SEARCH NET -NON LINEAR STORY STRUCTURE. images and link goes here ++ SET NARRATIVE AND CONTENT BUT NONLINEAR NAVIGATION ++ My approach to tackling the narrative structure in my non-linear story, is to keep it as focussed on the subject as possible and limit the number of " digressions and irrelevant actions". The approach I will take is to keep a simple linear narrative; setting a scene, placing characters and choreographing movement, hopefully creating atmosphere and drama. Instead of trying to create an elaborate map of causes and events within the story (or theme) itself, I aim to only use non-linear navigation though a set narrative - in which all elements fit into place in any way you end up seeing them. Aiming to show the audience a 360 degree view of the topic, they will be subjected to an experimental interface that they will need to use to explore the scenes, presenting them with the opportunity to create scenes and experience a number of unique compositions, all relative to the story. This type of non-linear story must rely on individual elements to communicate its story line. These elements can be randomly mixed in any order. If the content is constructed well, all elements should be able to tie in with each other any possible way. Furthermore the interface will also be as much part of the story as the audio and video.
