ADAWARE
Adware
is known by many names - spyware, trackware or even Big Brotherware.
While producers of adware claim its purpose is to collect information
about Internet habits to deliver ads tailored to a surfer's interests,
privacy advocates are concerned about the potential misuse of this data.
Ad-aware identifies and removes these surreptitiously installed applications.
Using updateable "reflists," which are similar to antivirus
DAT files, Ad-aware scours your system - including Registry and temporary
Internet files - and looks for traces of recognised adware modules.
SPYBOT SEARCH
& DESTROY
The
program searches your hard drive for so-called "spybots" or
"adbots". These are the programs responsible for displaying
advertising in some freeware and may transmit information, including
your Internet surfing behaviour to another server. You can choose which
ones you want to remove. In most cases the host still runs fine after
removing the spyware/adware however some programs may cease to operate
without these components. Spybot can also remove your usage tracks,
making it more complicated for unknown spyware to transmit useful data.
It also contains some routines to find and correct invalid registry
entries.

MAIL WASHER
MailWasher
is an anti-spam utility that lets you define rules for which incoming
emails are spam and which are legitimate. The more you use the program,
the more intelligent its filtering becomes and you have a great deal
of flexibility and control over how mail is processed. Offending mails
can also be responded to with a bounce message - to prevent further
spams - and certain senders or domains can be added to a Friends list
to keep them from being rejected in the future. The 2.0 version now
supports Hotmail, has faster performance, works better with AOL and
supports SMTP authentication.
DEATH2SPAM
This does not require a software installation
only some changes to your
e-mail settings in your program. It compares the pattern of words in
incoming mail against a data
base of acceptable mail versus spam, and assigns a numerical score indicating
its likelihood of
being spam, and rejects it. If it gets it wrong you can reassign the
status of messages which it
learns.
