Training
Volunteers do not need any special qualifications nor a particular personal background to become part of the Outer East Support Group - just a sensitive, caring approach, an ability to relate to a wide range of people and an acceptance of lifestyles different to their own.
Ensuring that volunteers are properly trained is important to the quality of care for clients. All members are encouraged to take part in training, Courses cover a wide variety of topics. There is no cost for the courses which are held throughout the year. Courses topics include all aspects of client care, personal growth; dealing with problems, and legal and ethical issues.
The need for confidentiality
All members of care teams have undergone training in the complex issues relating to HIV/AIDS and have agreed to a statement of understanding that they agree to the following:
maintain and respect the confidentiality of the client, their friends and family
be non-judgemental in their approach - regardless of their own beliefs
to respect the beliefs and lifestyles of the client
undertake training provided by the Victorian Aids Council to develop personal and practical skills.
