Dr Joseph Jordania

Joseph was born in the former USSR, Georgia, in 1954, in a family of professional musicians and musicologists. He studied ethnomusicology and became a professor of the Dept of Georgian Traditional Music at Tbilisi State Conservatory, and Head of the Musicological Section of the Centre of Mediterranean Studies at Tbilisi State University.

He has two PhDs in musicology and ethnomusicology (1982, 1991), is an author of more than 80 published works in several languages, including a book "Georgian Traditional Polyphony in International Context of Polyphonic Cultures" (Tbilisi University Press, 1989, in Russian), and major articles on Georgian and North Caucasian traditional music in the Garland Encyclopedia of World Music (2000) and The New Growe Dictionary of Music (2001).

Joseph has been a participant of major international conferences in the USA, UK, Switzerland, Germany, Brazil, Bulgaria, Russia, Ukraine, and organised several international conferences in Georgia on traditional polyphony.

He migrated to Australia in 1995 and is currently a Research Associate of the Faculty of Music at the University of Melbourne, and a participant and leader of several ensembles in Melbourne (arrangements of different styles).

Joseph participated (performing and leading workshops) in most of the major Australian national festivals (including Canberra NFF, Port Fairy NFF, Sydney A'Cappella, Melbourne A'Cappella, Woodword NFF, etc). He has been featured on ABC National Radio and TV programs.
