> about north arts
north arts is a relatively new organisation run for and by artists. It is an artists' initiative which aims to promote quality arts events and artistic activity across art forms in the North Melbourne area. north arts provides opportunities for artistic activity in the area as well as information for artists and links between artists and the community. Given the great number of practising artists in our community, it is important that north arts operate to best meet their needs. A survey of local artists in 1997 indicated a strong need for resources, networking and opportunities.

north arts aims to support artists by providing information, providing networking opportunities and facilitating events. Since the majority of artists in the area are professional or semi-professional (under-employed in their art work), north arts supports them best by developing opportunities and audiences for quality, contemporary artwork.

It has become clear that north arts is a great forum for artistic collaborations. In establishing the organisation, we have shared and learnt a lot about the needs of artists in a variety of art forms. We believe that all artists can benefit greatly from collaborations across art forms. north arts encourages artistic collaboration and believes in achieving its goals through collective strength.

north arts operates with the support of its local council, The City of Melbourne. We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the following sponsors: Currency Press, Andrew Harris Optometrist, Errol Street Books, elb design, Dee Hannan Graphic Design and The City of Melbourne.
