Telephone reporting of crime incidents extended to Prahran Police area

THE telephone reporting of some crime incidents, which was recently successfully trialed at nine police stations, has been extended to include the Prahran Police Station.
The aims of the new system are to ensure a greater police presence on the streets, a more expedient listing of stolen vehicles to police patrols, less time consuming and more convenient for victims, and more accurate local crime trends.
The following crimes can now be reported by telephone:

Damage to property (value less than $2000);
Theft from motor vehicle;
Theft of motor vehicle;
Theft of bicycle; and
Theft (value less than $2000).

Members of the public will be advised of this new reporting procedure and asked if they are happy to report their matter over the telephone.

Note: If a person expresses a desire for police attendance it will be arranged.

Good Guys Make Good Partners
The Good Guys, a well established successful discount electrical retailer, is the new official partner supporting the Neighbourhood Watch program.
Chairman of The Good Guys, Andrew Muir, stated at the official contract signing, "We have been looking for the right community program to be an active partner for some time. It is a priority of The Good Guys to increase the profile of the program and recruit new members and volunteers to Neighbourhood Watch."
Every month each Good Guys local catalogue will contain a section on Neighbourhood Watch and many resources are available to drive the program into the community at a local level.

CRIMESTOPPERS
If you have any information that may assist the police, remember:
CRIMESTOPPERS
Toll Free 1800 333 000

Last year, 29,000 anonymous calls to Crime Stoppers led to 503 arrests and 2112 charges. Police recovered stolen property valued at over $1.2 million and drugs valued at over $3.4 million. These figures can only increase if more people take action to pass on information.

Fall in bank robberies
COMPREHENSIVE analysis of bank robbery statistics from the Australian Institute of Criminology shows that the number and rate of bank robberies has fallen significantly since the 1980s.
Using information from the Australian Bankers' Association and data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, AIC analysis shows that the risk of bank robbery has decreased from approximately 91 bank robberies per 1,000 branches in the 1980's to around 26 robberies per 1,000 branches in the year 2000.
"It appears that there is a new type of offender who targets banks compared to the 1980s", said Dr Adam Graycar, AIC Director. "They are planning less, using fewer weapons, and instead relying more on sheer numbers to intimidate bank staff", he said.
The paper also found that around half of the robberies involved the use of weapons whereas in the 1980s around three quarters used weapons, and today's bank robberies are less successful - 24 per cent fail, compared with 11 per cent in the 1980s

Snapshot from mobile phone solves Swedish robbery
FOR the first time ever, the new technology that integrates cameras into mobile phones has helped the police in Gothenburg to solve a convenience store robbery
A 15-year-old boy threatened a convenience store owner with a knife, demanding him to open up the cash register. The owner refused and, while still under attack, managed to take a picture of the robber with his mobile phone.
Thanks to the clear photo, the police could arrest the 15-year-old after only 30 minutes in a nearby restaurant.
