DG's WEEKLY message
Rotary Friends
I wish to start this week's message with congratulations to the following members of the Rotary family who have received the Order of Australia Medal - OAM. They are PDG Ian Knight RC Werribee, Geoff Sussman RC Elsternwick and Molly Frampton wife of Keith our District Protection Officer and Glenferrie Rotarian Malcolm Taylor who also celebrated 50 years in Rotary this week. Also in the Honours list today is PDG Ian Riseley OAM District 9810 who will become a Director of Rotary International from 1st July.
This week ended with a trip to Echuca yesterday to attend the major event for the RC Echuca Moama, the 43rd Echuca Steam Horse & Vintage Rally. This is a wonderful event which attracts large crowds (in excess of 10,000) and is run over Saturday and Sunday of the Queens Birthday weekend. It was great to see so many Rotarians from Rochester, Central Melbourne Sunrise and Bendigo clubs assisting in the many roles that are needed for this event to be so successful. Following tradition I joined the judges for the Australian Performing Dogs Championships and could that winning dog sing!
The week began with the District Executive for my final meeting as Chairman and in the evening we attended the Welcome Home Dinner for the GSE Team. What a great night it was and the members of the team gave us an insight into the very full program that was provided by District 3660.They obviously enjoyed this experience and I
'm sure that all who attended were reminded of the benefits of this wonderful Rotary program. Thank you to President Noelle Pratt and the RC Brighton Beach who did a great job hosting the evening.
On Thursday I attended the RC Footscray to hear our Liaison Officer in East Timor Daryl Mills speak about his work and the recent events in East Timor. It also gave me great pleasure to assist President Emanuel Tumino pin a Sapphire PHF on Daryl and it was good to meet his wife Wadya who was with him at the meeting. They are keen to return to Dili as soon as they can to continue their work in assisting the people of East Timor. Remember the request in last week's e-zine for goods now urgently needed in East Timor.
In the evening I visited the RC Bendigo South who publicly launched the Margaret Roberts Motor Neurone Disease Research Grant at the Monash University School of Rural Health. This was a special evening attended by many distinguished guests and members of the Bendigo Community.
On Friday evening Fran and I were pleased to join the District Foundation Committee attending a dinner at the home of Rev Fr. Michael Elligate the Chair of the District Scholarship Committee to meet the Ambassadorial Scholars and their Counsellors and I believe it is a bonus for our District to have these fine young students in our midst for the year of their studies
.
Enjoy your week in Rotary.              DG John Wigley
