DG's WEEKLY message
Rotary Friends
What a great week this has been and I am writing this edition of my message after attending the District Assembly at Latrobe University where in excess of 600 Rotarians attended the most important training meeting for the coming Rotary year. I'm sure that DGE Bernie Walshe is pleased with the success of the day and I enjoyed being part of it.
The week started for me with a visit to the RC Richmond for the Ern Ainger Public Speaking Award. This is an annual event in honour of Ern Ainger who was a Past President of the Club who valued the art of effective communication. The Award started in 1990 and has been held every year since. The quality of the speeches from the ten students who reached the finals was amazing and Sharon Flitman from Mentone Girls Secondary College was a worthy winner.
On Tuesday morning I attended the Business Persons Breakfast held by the RC Toorak to hear the Defence Minister Brendan Nelson speak on "Australia's Place in the World." The breakfast was attended by 200 plus business men and women and was a good fundraiser for the District Tsunami project in Sthn. India.
I then had the pleasure to sign the cheques for the clubs over four Districts who participated in the C'weath Games Cleaning project and I look forward to seeing those involved at the afternoon Tea at Cleanevent this Wednesday afternoon.
In the evening Fran and I attended the Four Way Test Speaking Competition conducted by the RC Balwyn and again the six students who competed in the final were excellent speakers and covered the Four Way Test very well in their speeches.
Both of these speaking competitions impressed me as an excellent way to give students a podium to speak to an adult audience to express their views and of course it gives us the opportunity to expose the students, their teachers and their parents to Rotary
Friday at noon I arrived at Medway Golf Club too participate in the Annual Golf Day for the RC West Footscray and it was good to enjoy such a beautiful afternoon in mild weather. Dinner afterwards was good fun and fellowship and I congratulate Roger Climie and Ron Palmer on organising this event.
Saturday morning and I was at Tullamarine Airport to welcome home our GSE Team after their five week visit to Busan, Korea. They were tired but happy travellers and assured me that this was a trip of a lifetime. I look forward to many of you joining Fran and I to the Welcome Home Dinner on Tuesday 6th June  at Milano's Hotel.

On Saturday evening we attended the 71st Birthday of RC Essendon and what a great celebration it was! President Shirley and the club awarded a Sapphire to popular and hard working member Ian Thomas to add to his PHF which was presented by RI Past President Royce Abbey and then it was my turn to present a PHF to Archbishop Sir Frank Little who was so pleased to receive this recognition

Enjoy your week in Rotary.                         DG John Wigley
