DG's WEEKLY message
Rotary Friends
This week I have a request to make to those clubs who have not submitted their membership and attendance figures for some months as there are only 60% of clubs who are meeting their obligations to R1. Your attention to this matter is urgently required.
My week started with the District Executive meeting on Tuesday morning and later that day I visited Flemington Racecourse with Bi It Dagg and senior executives of Cleanevent to plan the Volunteers BBQ which is to take place on Sunday 2181 May commencing at 1-00pm.
On Wednesday we travelled to Echuca with DOE Bernie Walshe and Margaret to attend the funeral of Geoff Peace and there were many Rotary families from across the District attending to express their condolences support AG Anne and her family. In the evening we attended a meeting at RC Essendon North as they presented long serving member Geoff Ireland with a PHF. The Filipino ladies who formed part of their volunteer teams for the cleaning of the athletes village were welcomed to the meeting and they entertained us with their singing and traditional dancing.
Thursday evening it was the DLT meeting and I enjoyed this monthly review with the District leaders and hearing their reports on the many activities across the District.
On Saturday evening we attended Cafe Internationale at International House and what a wonderful night of entertainment from the students it was. The student are a very talented group and they treated us to the music of the Seventies and it was good to see a number of Rotary clubs represented at this annual event.
Sunday morning and I travelled to Maryborough for the annual Shine On Awards which were hosted by District 9780. What an inspirational day it was as we celebrated the abilities and achievements of people with disabilities; people who are making great contributions in a voluntary capacity to life in the community.
This year there were two Youth Awardees Sam Byrne and Natalie Carey both nominated by District 9800 clubs and 11 Adult Awardees (5 were from our District) In addition there were 39 Certificates of Commendation presented and again District 9800 was well represented.
I wish to acknowledge the great work of Dawn Watson and her committee as this is a very worthwhile program in Our District and I was privileged to meet many of these exceptional people. Congratulations to the RC Maryborough who hosted this great occasion.
Also on Sunday Fran attended the Alola Foundation lunch in Collingwood with Lauris Freedman and Jill Forsythe and met Guest of Honour Kirsty Sword Gusmao and learned more of the needs of the people in East Timor.  Enjoy your week in Rotary. DG John Wigley
