DG's WEEKLY message
Rotary Friends
It is my pleasure to announce the Nominating Committee for District Governor 2008/02009 conducted the interview process today and the successful candidate is PP Jim Studebaker from the RC North Balwyn. I’m sure you will all join me in offering congratulations to Jim and his wife Carol.
On Tuesday evening Fran and I attended the RC Gisborne and it was a special night as visiting Rotarian Bill Harper from the RC Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands presented his daughter Robyn Head (a non-Rotarian) with a PHF.Bill is a regular visitor to the RC Gisborne and Robyn is actively involved in the Macedon Ranges community.
Wednesday was a special day as it was the 85th Anniversary of the founding of Rotary in Australia and of course the 85th Birthday for the RC Melbourne. This important event was celebrated in style with a packed house luncheon attended by RI Past President Royce Abbey and many distinguished guests. President Mev Connell was resplendent in his kilts and who will forget the “Happy Birthday Mr. President” song by “Marilyn” bringing in the birthday cake.
Wednesday evening the RC Castlemaine paid a visit to the RC Kyneton and then visited the vintage car collection of Conference Chairman Ivan Smith. It was then an early start to visit RC Tullamarine for breakfast on Thursday morning and be present for the handing over of a cheque for $16,000 to the MS Society being the proceeds of their Mega Swim last November. It was also great to see the good attendance at this meeting and Pres. Rob Lawrence and his team is to be congratulated for the success of this project.
On Thursday evening Fran and I attended the RC Bendigo South for the launch of their new major project, The Margaret Roberts Motor Neurone Disease Research Scholarship which is named after one of Bendigo's strongest community workers. The scholarship holder Adam Walker will conduct his research at the Howard Florey Institute at Melbourne University and was present to hear an address by the CEO of MND Assoc. of Victoria Rodney Harris. Congratulations Bendigo South on this great initiative!
Friday morning saw me in Melbourne to meet with the Steering Committee of PACE, Partnerships Advancing Community Engagement, the new project that the RT Rev. Peter Hollingworth spoke about at the District Conference. There are representatives of the Department for Victorian Communities, The Brotherhood of St Laurence and Rotarians from our District on this committee.
|Zonta District Governor Ronda Walker joins me in looking forward to your company at the Governors Ball at the Kyneton Town Hall next Saturday so why not make up a table and join in the fun!

  4. The Age features ROMAC on 4 April
On the 4th April The Age published a story of 2.6 Kg Maria who was going to die because of lack of medical facilities to treat a hole in the heart in East Timor. A Sydney surgeon volunteered to do the necessary operation.
But life saving operations are just one step in patient care.  It involves passports, visas, transport, en route carers, local carers, interpreters and a whole range of support mechanisms. Plus often there are hospital charges.
ROMAC stepped in and has received daily publicity in The Age and is the quoted charity to receive donation to help Maria.  ROMAC has been a key to the project as we were one of the few organisations that could put all the steps in place within a time limit that would keep Maria alive.
I would strongly recommend you go to http.//theage.com.au and click on the Maria story or go direct via www.theage.com.au/flash/babyMaria/menu.html
It lists the daily coverage plus some heart rendering pictures.
