DG Bernie's Weekly Message

We all acknowledge that our youth are the future and the advancement of our great country will depend entirely on them and so, we have an important role to play in preparing them to be able to 'Lead the Way' through the 21st century.

All care must be taken to ensure they are not our clones, for our future must be guided by fresh thought and vigorous enterprise.

It will be our responsibility, however, to provide our youth with every opportunity to learn about leadership, to enable social interaction with their groups and develop a strong sense of citizenship that will serve them well in their adult life.

Rotary has dynamic programmes for youth that suit the important age groups and we are going to promote and enlarge their impact this year.

Rotaract: These are Clubs for 18 to 30 years olds that are sponsored and nurtured by local Rotary Clubs where young members seek to develop friendships and professional contacts that will enable them to address the physical and social needs of their communities. We would hope their involvement would eventually lead to membership in Rotary.

Interact: Founded in 1962, this programme has grown dramatically into a Rotary sponsored international programme for service minded young people between the ages of 14 and 18 years who are in the final years of secondary school. Clubs can be community based but are usually attached to the local high school. The purpose of Interact is to provide opportunities for young people to work together in a world fellowship dedicated to service and international understanding.

At the start of this important Rotary year, I am asking Clubs to provide the platform for our young people to experience the responsibilities of good citizenship at these vital ages.

Please consider these strongly as part of your youth programme and Lead the Way for our youth into the world of the future.

Object of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
