DG's WEEKLY message
Fellow Rotarians,
I trust that you enjoyed celebrating Australia Day and I am pleased to advise that there were three Rotarians from our district who received recognition with the Order of Australia OAM. PDG Vance Hilton RC of Flemington, Ian Angus RC of Central Melbourne Sunrise and Dr Ronnie Goldberg from RC Williamstown. Also very popular AG Anne Peace was announced as Echuca Citizen of the Year and the Shire of Campaspe Citizen of the Year. Congratulations to you all!
I know that there were many functions that were organised by Rotary clubs in our District. Fran and I attended the RC St Kilda’s brunch held in the Sth Melbourne Town Hall and it was pleasing for the organisers to see Rotarians from at least seven clubs supporting their function and approx $6500 was raised for the Sacred Heart Mission, ROCAN and Frontier Services (formerly Flynn of the Inland Mission).
It was good to see PRIP Royce Abbey and the guest speaker, the Hon. Tim Fischer AC was outstanding as we learned more about our history from him. What a great asset to our nation is Tim!
In the evening there was an Australia Day concert in Kyneton conducted by our Rotary club and apart from some songs from the club choir (who you will hear at the Conference) there were some tall Aussie tales told and two wonderful Banjo Patterson
Poems recited by Bob Potton whose wife Mary is the Kyneton Rotary choir musical director. What a pleasant way to end the day!
On Wednesday evening I attended another of the summer meetings this time at the RC Brimbank Central. Pres Dino Sappupo welcomed approx 155 Rotarians from six clubs. Guest speaker Hazel Edwards entertained us with her stories of Antarctica.
I would like to advise that there are profiles of the speakers at the conference on the website www.rotary9800conference.com
and as an attachment to this e-Zine. There will also be six wide-ranging workshops with guest speakers to lead the discussion. This Conference will have something for everyone and I urge you not to miss it.
Enjoy your week in Rotary                        DG John Wigley
