DG's
WEEKLY message
Rotary Friends and families
What a wonderful week
to be a Rotarian. We all had the opportunity to visit our club and
meet our friends, share a meal, listen to a speaker and hear about
what's happening in Rotary here and internationally. How lucky are we
all! We had a lesser number of visits this week due to two cancellations for
unavoidable reasons however we enjoyed our visits to Maribyrnong Highpoint,
Balwyn and Albert Park. Two breakfast clubs in one week. Wow.
I have been impressed by the wide variety of community and international
projects that our clubs carry out and this reinforces the statement I make
in my address that Rotary's history has been written by what happens in
clubs and will continue to do so as we write the first page of rotary
history for the next century of service above self.
We also attended the performance of the Australian Army Melbourne Concert
Band at the Glen Eira Town Hall arranged by the Re-building East Timor
Committee and the small number who attended will not forget this wonderful
evening for some time. This band are most entertaining with a
repertoire covering the classics, musical comedy, pops and traditional from
other countries where they have served. It's a pity that we did not
pack the hall for this event!
This week we will visit another six clubs and we are also looking forward to
a visit to the Royal Women’s Hospital on Tuesday morning to tour the
Gynaecological Cancer Research Unit. Planning for the District
Conference in Geelong is moving on and the web-site and registration forms
will be available before the end of the month.
Enjoy your week in Rotary.

Advice for the Week:
If you have a lot of tension
and you get a headache, do what it says on the aspirin bottle:
"Take two aspirin" and "Keep away from children."

Rotary
Foundation Thought - with thanks to the RC of Melbourne's electronic bulletin.
By the time the
world is certified polio-free, Rotary's contributions to the global polio
eradication effort will exceed US$600 million. This is the largest private
sector donation to this initiative and second only to the US government in
total contributions. PolioPlus has made the world take notice of Rotary and
what we can achieve. We now have respected partnerships with such groups as
UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Centers for Disease
Control (CDC). We have earned their respect and are seen as instrumental to
this initiative.
In the words of Carol Bellamy, former executive director of UNICEF:
"Rotary's presence has been vital for the PolioPlus effort. Without
Rotary, everything would have been different."

Alan Embury - RC of Richmond
Past President & Paul Harris Fellow Sapphire.
Our much loved members and dear Rotarian friend, Alan Embury,
died at 5.00pm on Thursday at the Monash Medical Centre.
Alan served the club with distinction for more than 25 years . He was
club president 1989-1990 and was awarded a PHF 1992-1993 and a
Sapphire 1996 -1997. He also served the club as Secretary, Bulletin
Editor and Club director and Sergeant over many years. Alan
resigned due to ill health at the end of June 2005, but continued to
take a keen interest in Club business and maintained the Club records
from his hospital bed. We were all inspired by his courage, optimism
and good humour, and his commitment to "Service Above Self. He
has struggled for so long with so many medical problems, and now the
only consolation is that his suffering is over.

Special
Speaker at RC of Southbank - 27th September
Ralph Coyne got to know East Timor in a remarkable way. In 1942 he was
at a parade of 500 men when there was a call for signallers to join a
special force to be dropped into enemy-held territory. He joined
Sparrow Force and has had a unique relationship with East Timor for
over 63 years as a result. Click
