DG's
WEEKLY message
Rotary Friends,
What a great week starting with my attendance at a dinner hosted by
Premier Steve Bracks to launch the Xanana Vocational Education Trust. His
Excellency Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao and Sir William Deane Australian Patron
of the Trust were present along with PP Philip Archer and Chris Trueman
from the RC Southbank and PP Bob Glindeman from RC Melbourne and representatives
of many community organisations.
Tuesday morning the RC Southbank held a Business Breakfast at the Sofitel
Hotel where over 600 attendees listened to Leadership presentations from
Xanana Gusmao and Sir William Deane and what a successful morning it was
to raise funds for the Trust.
On Tuesday evening Fran and I visited Yarraville for the induction of
Wayne Hunter and it was a pleasure to meet his wife Ann and his three
daughters who were there to support him.
Unfortunately the dreaded bug kept me from attending Melton Valley on
Wednesday but I know that Graham Dempsey was inducted in style.
The first District Leadership Team meeting was held on Thursday evening
and it was good to get the team together to touch base on the plans for
the year.
On Friday night I visited Altona for the
induction of Bert Dellosa and Nenet and their family were there
in strength for Bert. Saturday night saw us in Rochester where Graham
Nelson is backing up for another year as President and after a successful
year with membership increasing by 50% a target of another 25% is
his goal. PDG Judy and John joined us for some wonderful country
hospitality and Rotary friendship.
I hope your visit to your Rotary Club this week is fun.
DG John Wigley

Rotary
Information - More from RI President Carl-Wilhem Stenhammar
Literacy is a huge
area with many needs. In order to expand our reach on the same penny,
I strongly recommend cooperation with other organizations working in
the same field. A small example of how thhis can be done is through
the International Save the Children Alliance, a network involving
approximately 30 countries around the world. My
goal is to work with them to build 300 schools in developing
countries.
Although we cannot use Rotary Foundation grants to erect buildings, we
can use them to equip schools. We have met with Save the Children in
Evanston, and we will work together on projects of joint interest,
focusing on education. I am sure that this effort will result in not
just 300 new schools but 600 or maybe even 750 new schools. If 100
children attend each school, then 75,000 more children could learn how
to read, write, and count – three skills that are essential for an
acceptable life.
The years 2003-2012 have been declared the "Decade of
Literacy" by the United Nations. Let us participate together in
making this decade a success through Service Above Self, thus
continuing to show the world the great leadership of Rotary
International.
