DG Bernie's Message

WHAT IS A SATELLITE CLUB?

When we believe a new Club is possible in a new or adjoining area, we set out to attract potential members to join this new group until we have sufficient numbers to charter a Club. Usually, this takes some time and there is a danger of these potential members losing interest because of the time element and, maybe, lack of action and progress.

The Satellite Club system has some similarities except it operates quite differently:

  • The Satellite Club becomes a committee of an existing Club who will support and nurture the new group.

  • Members of the Satellite Club will be inducted as members of the sponsoring Club.

  • The new group will operate as a Committee of the existing Club with the primary purpose of developing other members to join their group until they have reached a critical mass to enable them to charter the new Club formed with their group as the charter members.

  • The Satellite group will meet with the sponsoring Club but will have their own “committee” meetings to develop their membership until such time as they are chartered.

It is foreseen that the new Satellite may commence with as few as five or six members, however, when they are ready to be chartered as a new Club, they will commence with some experience as Rotarians. The sponsoring Club will continue to monitor and support their development and they will be included in the existing Cluster for further support. Of course, the sponsor will be aware that these new Rotarians will eventually leave their Club when Chartering happens.

This system gives us the opportunity to review our efforts in the new area to ensure our development is in the correct area and the necessary support for the project is sufficient.

We see this as a win/win situation for the Sponsor Club as it is a further service they are performing and it expands their membership, albeit, for the time being, for the new members as they are welcomed into the Rotary family and for Rotary International as it continues to expand its global team to enable greater service to be given to the people in need and to further world peace and understanding.

We can never stop trying to reach the magical goal in our District of three thousand members again, however, it is the offer of the gift of membership to those who can provide future service that will be the very special result of our endeavours.

Together we will Lead the Way by developing future members.

About the event

The Wild West is the setting for the 98th annual RI Convention. But you won't find anything rough or unsophisticated about Salt Lake City. Utah's state capital boasts all the amenities of a big city — world-class accommodations, entertainment, dining, and culture — as well as the family atmosphere and safety of a small town. And like Rotary itself, Salt Lake City offers a welcoming environment with more than 80 languages spoken by its citizens.

Known as the Crossroads of the West, this cosmopolitan U.S. city makes an ideal base camp for visiting the many natural attractions and historic sites nearby. Stay in the city and visit the Olympic Legacy Plaza, historic Temple Square, or the Family History Library. Or take to the road and tour one of 15 scenic national parks, including Yellowstone, Grand Teton, and Arches, and historic monuments within a day's drive of Salt Lake City.
