DG Bernie's Weekly Message
THE SPIRIT OF ANZAC

It was 10 years after the founding of Rotary International that men of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed on the beaches and stormed the cliffs of Gallipoli and etched into history, the legend of ANZAC.

These brave soldiers were on an adventure, not really knowing the dangers that lay ahead, but they gave their lives, displaying extraordinary courage in the face of overwhelming odds and breathed life to the Australian character who gave service above self.

This same determination was displayed on many battlefields involving Australian forces since that fateful period now called simply, Gallipoli. We remember those deeds and sacrifices on the anniversary of that landing on Turkish shores, 25th April 1915 and each year it becomes traditional to participate in remembrance ceremonies be it Anzac Day parades, church services or just watching the ANZAC Dawn Service at Gallipoli on television.

Service Above Self is familiar to Rotarians as it is our standard and motto that we live by and which propels us forward providing service to those in need. We are volunteers that use our talents and time for the service of others. We must ensure we are not found wanting when we are asked to scale the heights or make sacrifices for the sake of those less fortunate or to show loyalty to our organisation through solidarity and effort in our Rotary Club.

Above all, let us remember those who have fallen so we might live and for this privilege of freedom, let us not waste our lives or waste our time, for the future is precious.

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Lt. Col John McCrae MD

Lest We Forget.

Bernie Walshe

Council on Legislation
Every three years selected Rotarians meet in Chicago as part of the Council on Legislation to deliberate on issues that affect every Rotarian. This year the Council will meet from 22 to 27 April. Some of the hot topics include attendance, administration, membership, and programs.

You can access daily coverage of the Council deliberations from 24 to 27 April at www.rotary.org

Rotary's "parliament" will act upon all proposed enactments and resolutions submitted by clubs, district conferences, the General Council or the Conference of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, or the Rotary International Board. The Council itself also makes proposals.

The Council is comprised of more than 500 representatives from every part of the Rotary world. Voting members include one elected representative of the clubs of each Rotary district. Some nonvoting members include the chair and vice chair of the council, the RI president, members of the RI Board, and past RI presidents. D9800's representative is PDG Ian Knight.

The first Council convened in an advisory capacity in 1934 as an integral part of that year’s international convention in Detroit, USA. In 1970, it was constituted as the legislative body of RI. Actions of the Council are subject to review by all Rotary clubs prior to being incorporated into the Manual of Procedure.
