DG Bernie's Weekly Message
THE "L" PLATE ROTARIAN

We are at that time of the year when the future leaders of our Clubs and also District are busy with training and the preparation of their plans and objectives for the ensuing year.

One could be forgiven for suggesting that the "L" Plate stands for "Learner" but nothing could be further from the truth for in Rotary, the "L" stands for "Leader".

Next weekend is the Presidents' Elect Training Seminar (PETS) and DGE John Davis has next year's Presidents going to Shepparton for an intensive, but rewarding weekend that will involve tutorials, talks and plenty of fellowship. As I have said previously, Fellowship is the glue that holds Rotary together and the future leaders will get a fair dose of that as they prepare themselves for the year ahead.

It does not seem that long when I had to organize the PETS and so the wheel turns with the new crew ready to step up and propel Rotary forward a few more cogs.

They will also be made familiar with the new President's plans and emphases and be shown how to use the theme for the year to take advantage of everything that will be good for Rotary, for the community and for the world.

This weekend will be the forerunner to the District Assembly where all Club Officers for 2007-8 will be trained for the various portfolios. We should call this the springtime of Rotary because that is when the buds are starting to appear and the new summertime is not far away.

I ask all members to support their future leaders, to assist them with their endeavours and encourage them by telling them of your loyalty and willingness to work with them. I would also ask those who have not experienced a PETS or District Assembly to make a note to work well in their Club so you will be able to step up and take your place as a future leader in this great organization of Rotary International that has been serving the communities of the world for over 100 years.

Lead the Way and support our future leaders.

Bernie Walshe

District Governor

Growth of the ARHRF
Thanks to the hard work and generosity of Rotarians Australia-wide, the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund is expanding the number of carefully selected projects and scholarships it funds at an outstanding pace.

The ARHRF Funding Partners program is becoming increasingly popular and to meet demand the Board has more than doubled the amount of money available for these projects. Under this program, Rotary Clubs or individuals have the opportunity to facilitate research into an area that is of special concern to them and ARHRF will match the funds donated by the club or individual. In 2007, ARHRF has allocated $915,000 for scholarships and research into areas as diverse as Multiple Sclerosis, Prostate Cancer, Motor Neurone Disease, Childhood Bullying, Dementia, Parkinson's Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Cardiac Disease, Alzheimer's Disease and Brain Tumours, to name a few.

ARHRF is continuing its focus on mental illness and has committed $1,039,562 to 21 research projects and a further $475,000 for 10 projects, specifically to evaluate existing mental health services.

In addition, ARHRF is making substantial contributions aimed at improving health outcomes in indigenous and rural communities through a large number of scholarships.

ARHRF is Rotary's largest national Rotary community service program and it is the biggest independent health research fund in the country. Supporting ARHRF enables Rotarians to enhance the health of the Australian community as a whole as well as assisting those who are most in need. Research projects aim to support the development of practical strategies that Rotary Clubs can then apply in their own communities.

Your Club's donation, or your personal donation to the ARHRF will ensure our continued success.
