DG Bernie's Weekly Message
EXPERIENCE THE POWER OF ROTARY

Next weekend, all those who will journey to Canberra for the 2007 District Conference will experience the Power of Rotary. They will be witness to significant presentations that will all focus on this important theme.

Guest Speakers will talk of power experienced by riding the rocket, performing micro surgery or by the thrill of competing. Others will experience the power from the determination to succeed, the opportunity of saving lives or just living with danger. We will also hear of the heroic acts and the power that comes from assisting those less fortunate.

Rotary presentations will relate the success of achievement, the power of leadership or the simple act of lifting one from life's whirlpool. All this will take place in the seat of power, our National Capital.

On Saturday, I waved off the 25 bike riders who commenced their ride to the Conference in Canberra and who are determined to raise $120,000 for Ovarian Cancer Research and the Royal Children's Hospital "Heart Kids" facility. They are going the long way around so they can collect as much as possible and they will experience the power of determination to endure this arduous journey because they care and this is their way of pitching in to help. I look forward to welcoming them to Canberra.

The power of our District has been recognised by the appointment of PDG Dr. Ken Khoo from Malaysia as the RI President's Representative at the Conference. It is not often you have an international appointed in this capacity.

We are members of the Rotary family because we know there is power in combining our forces to achieve marvellous things. On our own, we can make a difference, together, we can move mountains.

I have promoted fun and fellowship as being the principal motivators that keep the Rotary Wheel turning. The feeling of freedom from stress and anxiety helps us bond with our fellow members who will have the confidence in you and join you in making the world a better place.

Canberra will be rippling with fun and fellowship as well as playing host to the 75th District 9800 Conference. And that is what makes us different from other service clubs and organisations because the more we play, the more we achieve.

The achievements of Rotary can be spelt out in the word, POWER:

Planning and Perseverance
Opportunity
Work
Expertise and Effort
Resolve and Result

LEAD THE WAY and Experience the Power of Rotary.

Bernie Walshe
District Governor

RI PRESIDENT BILL BOYD'S MESSAGE ON LITERACY
Without literacy, all the written words we encounter every day - not just in books & newspapers, but in maps, labels, street signs, & billboards - are mysteries & roadblocks to full integration into society. For me, teaching someone to read is one of the most rewarding acts of service imaginable. All it costs is patience & time, & the rewards are incalculable.

Like nothing else, literacy is a stepping stone away from poverty. It is a gift of self-reliance, one that can be freely passed on from generation to generation. Once there's literacy in a family, it's almost always there to stay, as literate parents raise literate children. Literate parents are also more likely to raise healthier children, whose horizons will stretch far beyond their own homes & villages.

Literacy has rightly been high on Rotary's service agenda for years now, & it should feature among the projects of every Rotary club. Whether the goal is donating books, running literacy classes, supplying elementary school students with dictionaries, or just helping children with their schoolwork, literacy projects bring great results with very little investment of money.
