DG Bernie's Message

FUNDING OUR FOUNDATION

I am sure you join with me in acknowledging the support given by The Rotary Foundation and the generous funding of the various programmes that are established to promote world understanding and peace throughout the world. The Rotary Foundation (TRF) is the only charitable organisation funded by contributions from Rotarians for programmes and projects identified by Rotarians and administered by Rotarians at the project site.

First and foremost let me make the statement that all contributions made to the Foundation are voluntary. There is no funding that goes to the Foundation from dues or subscriptions.

But where do the funds come from to support such a well of charitable assets?

Annual Giving by Clubs go to the Annual Programs Fund and Clubs receive credits towards Paul Harris Fellow Recognitions. Clubs are free to give what they can but are asked to consider contributions amounting to around $AU150 per member each year.

Centurion Club membership is an individual donation of a minimum of $AU100 each year and these contributions count towards PHF credits for that individual. Arrangements have also been made to make these donations Tax Deductible in Australia. Centurions receive a specially designed pin to wear and a Certificate.

Paul Harris Fellow Recognition requires a gift of $US1,000 to allow a person to be recognised or to be able to nominate some other person for recognition.

Testamentary Gifts are those where the person has included The Rotary Foundation in their Will where at least $US1,000 has been bequeathed. These persons are named Benefactors and funds are invested in perpetuity as Permanent Fund Gifts.

Other gifts by individuals include Major Donor commitments of $US10,000 or more, Life Income gifts or outright gifts of property and investments.

There are other forms of gifts and many forms of recognition for those gifts and these are part of the lifeblood that supports the work of Rotary and enables the many projects that are undertaken for those less fortunate than ourselves.

I have emphasised the following four points about the Foundation during my visits to all Clubs:

1. All contributions to the Foundation are voluntary.

2. All capital contributed comes back to Rotary to fund the various projects and programmes of the Foundation.

3. Costs of running the Foundation are funded by some of the interest earned by the capital.

4. The Rotary Foundation is OUR OWN CHARITY.

Further information can be sought from PDG John Wigley who is the Chairman of the Contributions Committee on Foundation.

Let us Lead The Way by experiencing the joy of giving.

NOVEMBER IS FOUNDATION MONTH

D

ROTARY FOUNDATION ALUMNI

In this Foundation Month the RI website has numerous references to aspects of The Rotary Foundation. Each year, thousands of Rotarians and non-Rotarians around the world take part in one of the many programs of The Rotary Foundation. These programs enrich the lives of participants and spread Rotary's vision of peace and world understanding. Their experiences foster international understanding through person-to-person contact, friendship, study, service, and cross-cultural exchange. Foundation program participants serve as goodwill ambassadors not just when they're abroad, but also when they return to their home countries as alumni.

These groups have a connection to Rotary clubs around the world who sponsor and host their experience. Many Rotary Foundation alumni continue to stay connected and give back to Rotary in a variety of ways. Some eventually become Rotary club members themselves. The experience of living, learning, or serving in a land other than their own makes every Foundation alumnus an advocate for Rotary's ideals.

Who are the alumni of The Rotary Foundation?

More than 90,000 people call themselves Rotary Foundation Alumni. Alumni have participated in any of the following Rotary Foundation programs:

You can read details about each of these programs at the RI website:

6 PM MONDAY 27 NOVEMBER DISTRICT ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

R

  1. RIPE WILF WILKINSON TO VISIT MELBOURNE - PARKING
By now all Rotarians will be aware that RIPE Wilf Wilkinson will be in Melbourne speaking and meeting Rotarians from the Victorian Districts at a Dinner meeting in the Members Dining room at the MCG on Monday 20th November.

On present indications about 500 Rotarians and guests will be attending the Wilf Wilkinson Dinner on the 20th November at the MCG.  The MCG has allocated Rotary 250 underground car park spaces which should be enough if we have two people to a car. Could you please ask your Club members who are coming to car pool so that we can ensure that we have enough parking for everyone.  This would be very much appreciated.

  2. FOUNDATION MATCHING GRANTS WORKSHOP
The advertised Workshop has been rescheduled for Monday 27th November commencing at 6PM at International House.

    5.   EXCITING POSITION AVAILABLE FOR D9800 ROTARIAN
Our Valuable Asset - "Donations in Kind"

Expressions of interest are still being accepted from
Rotarians to supervise the District DIK store. This project
has been handled by PP Bill Dagg of RC of West Footscray
who has been doing this job for 6 years and needs to step
     down for a period.

Rotarians, who are retired and are prepared to give at least
one day a week, either on a Tuesday or a Thursday, to run
the D9800 DIK store at West Footscray, are required to
continue this program with a team that has been established
and can assist the successful applicant to maintain this
worthwhile outlet to the world. Hands on is the key and you
only need to be on site to supervise the activities and care
for the paperwork. Be assured that it is not a 7 day a week
     activity.

With new ideas and more club activity you could become the
new catalyst for the future of District 9800 and others in the
Southern Region involved in DIK programs and projects.
