DG Bernie's Message

Rotary's Gift to the Children of the World

In 1985, Rotary International decided to tackle one of the greatest and most debilitating diseases on earth that affected young children. They decided to take up the fight and eradicate Poliomyelitis, what we know as Polio.

We are winning the fight as the number of polio cases has been reduced from 350,000 children annually in the mid 1980's to approximately 2,000 cases last year. This has now been further reduced to 1228 cases as at 3 October 2006.

Polio is a highly infectious disease that can cause paralysis and sometimes death and it still strikes children in parts of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. There are four countries that are still endemic, that is, where the disease recurs in certain localities, and they are Nigeria, India, Afghanistan and Pakistan with Nigeria posing the biggest problem with around two thirds of the total global cases (803).

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative is spearheaded by the World Health Organisation, Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

Rotary International is the world's first and one of the largest non-profit humanitarian service organizations. Our members initiate community projects and address many of the critical issues we face today such as violence, AIDS, hunger, the environment and health care. We also conduct the massive Rotary Foundation that funds the worldwide and groundbreaking work of the PolioPlus campaign that is pushing to make the Polio Eradication dream come true. $US19 million was contributed to the campaign in to date in 2006 and this brings our total financial commitment to around $US616 million.

We are winning the fight but the battle still rages and constant support of all Rotarians is needed to ensure this dreadful disease is snuffed out quickly. Further information can be found by visiting www.polioeradication.org

We can all help to make that dream come true and truly share in our Gift To The Children Of The World.

Lead The Way by supporting our Foundation and the PolioPlus campaign.

NOVEMBER IS FOUNDATION MONTH

D

RI PRESIDENT BILL BOYD'S MESSAGE ON FOUNDATION

It's almost impossible to imagine Rotary today without The Rotary Foundation. So much of what Rotary is known for - international service projects, grants, scholarships and, above all, PolioPlus - depends on the Foundation. Without the Foundation, Rotary could never have grown into a truly international organization. A Rotary without Matching Grants, without Ambassadorial Scholars, and without the unifying fight for polio eradication would be a Rotary without many of the most important ties linking our clubs and districts.

The Rotary Foundation was not founded by coincidence. Because Rotary is an organization of businesspeople and professionals, we tend to be a very practical group. There are very few starry-eyed idealists in Rotary, and although we may follow our hearts, we lead with our heads. As Rotarians, we assess needs, consider our resources, and constantly try to do the most with what we have. Arch C. Klumph, the Foundation's founder, realized that a central pool of resources could increase the power of each Rotary club.

The Rotary Foundation is a major reason Rotarians are able to accomplish so much. But the Foundation's financial support is only part of the equation. The talents and reach of our membership mean that a dollar or a euro or a yen given to the Foundation can do much more than anyone might expect. When projects are run by knowledgeable volunteers, using volunteer labour &, often, donated materials, a relatively small grant can make a big difference.

The classic example, of course, is PolioPlus. The cost of a dose of oral polio vaccine is small, but the logistics of delivering it are daunting. Yet when hundreds or thousands of Rotarians come together to deliver vaccines during a National Immunization Day, the greatest hurdle has already been overcome, and the Foundation is there to help with the rest. Great works like these could not happen without Rotarians, and they could not happen without the Foundation.

Rotarians know the value of a good investment. That is why every year, Rotarians give to the Foundation. We know that our money will be used well and wisely by our fellow Rotarians and that together we can do so much more than we could ever do alone. That is why I ask all of you to Lead the Way in your clubs with a gift to the Foundation - this year and every year.

    9. EXCITING POSITION AVAILABLE FOR D9800 ROTARIAN
Our Valuable Asset - "Donations in Kind"

We are still looking for expressions of interest from Rotarians to supervise the District DIK store. This project has to this time been handled by PP Bill Dagg of the Rotary Club of West Footscray. PP Bill has been doing this job for 6 years and needs to step down for a period.

Rotarians, who are retired and are prepared to give at least one day a week, either on a Tuesday or a Thursday, to run the D9800 DIK store at West Footscray, are required to continue this program with a team that has been established and can assist the successful applicant to maintain this worthwhile outlet to the world. Hands on is the key and you only need to be on site to supervise the activities and care for the paperwork. Be assured that it is not a 7 day a week activity. PP Bill has many ways to assist those that show an interest and is willing to help them get into the swing of things.

With new ideas and more club activity you could become the new catalyst for the future of District 9800 and others in the Southern Region involved in DIK programs and projects.
