DG Bernie's Message

VOCATIONAL SERVICE - THE PROJECTS

 The Second Avenue of Service is really the foundation on which Rotary was built because it was this line of ethical enterprise that was counter to all that the birth of Rotary experienced over 100 years ago.

Today, we recognise the Four Way Test and this charter is found in many offices and they do not all involve Rotarians' businesses. We have developed many programs under the banner of Vocational Service, all connected with the pursuit of promoting ethics in business. Some of the District's involvement in Vocational Service is not always unique to our District and it is good that we sometimes combine with other Districts to attain the epitome of good business and promotion of people in the workforce.

Some of our projects include:
Career Interviews and Counselling                                                              Business Awards
Providing Work Experience for students                                                      Inter School Debates
Computers 4 Kids                                                                                      Literacy Project "Read to the Children"
Rotary Trivial Pursuit Challenge                                                                   Establish a Sister Club Relationship
Sponsor a Candidate for a Shine On Award                                                 Pride of Workmanship Award
Community Achievement/Volunteer Awards
Ethics Debates within your Club or with other clubs
Awarding Young Achievers with a Young Achievers Australia Award

Many will be amazed at the number of projects that fall under the Vocational umbrella and the list is not limited as it can be expanded according to the depth and breadth of your imagination. Projects that can be singled out for special mention are:

Computers 4 Kids - this collects redundant computers that are taken to a central point and cleaned up and updated by, usually unemployed youth, and sent to underdeveloped countries and locals, who cannot afford such facility, to assist their educational and business needs. This has been one of the most successful projects operated under Vocational Service and the supply of computers is virtually endless.

Pride of Workmanship Award - this seeks to acknowledge individuals whose exemplary contributions to their vocations are worthy of public acknowledgement. This is a program initiated outside of our District but is serves two important purposes. It certainly gives recognition to an individual to acknowledge their worth in their chosen vocation and it provides Rotary with a fair measure of publicity as this award is certainly worthy of being broadcast within the local community so that others will look forward to or seek this award in the future.

Shine On Award - this originated in Queensland and it recognises the personal achievements and dedicated commitment to community service by those who suffer from some form of disability. It is through their shining example to the community at large that that the award takes its name. Clubs are invited to nominate suitable candidates and the Award Ceremony takes place in Victoria each year in a different District. This year, the Award Ceremony will be held in Morwell in May 2007. This has been an important part of our District and it is one of the programs that makes us proud of our fellow citizens that have not only recognised their limitations in life, but have climbed to the very heights to not let their disability deter them in their quest for a better and normal life. This is a most inspirational program.

Vocational Service helps us Lead the Way.

Declaration of Rotarians in Business and Professions

The Declaration of Rotarians in Businesses and Professions was adopted by the Rotary International Council on Legislation in 1989 to provide more specific guidelines for the high ethical standards called for in the Object of Rotary:

As a Rotarian engaged in a business or profession, I am expected to:

  • Consider my vocation to be another opportunity to serve;

  • Be faithful to the letter and to the spirit of the ethical codes of my vocation, to the laws of my country, and to the moral standards of my community;

  • Do all in my power to dignify my vocation and to promote the highest ethical standards in my chosen vocation;

  • Be fair to my employer, employees, associates, competitors, customers, the public, and all those with whom I have a business or professional relationship;

  • Recognize the honour and respect due to all occupations which are useful to society;

  • Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community;

  • Adhere to honesty in my advertising and in all representations to the public concerning my business or profession;

  • Neither seek from nor grant to a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship.
