DG Bernie's Message

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL - THE KNOWLEDGE

In a continuing effort to bring the knowledge of our great organisation to every Rotarian, I have presented the following points regarding our structures and purpose in an attempt to revisit the need for and importance of the existence of Rotary in our world today.

Rotary International is the association of Rotary Clubs throughout the world and is an organisation of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world. The members of Rotary International are the Clubs and presently, these are in excess of 30,000 worldwide. Rotarians are members of their respective Clubs.

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

  • First - the development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.
  • Second - high ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
  • Third - the application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business and community life;
  • Fourth - the advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The Mission of Rotary International is to support its member clubs in fulfilling the Object of Rotary by:

  • Fostering unity among member Clubs
  • Strengthening and expanding Rotary around the world
  • Communicating worldwide the work of Rotary
  • Providing a system of international administration.

The District - its activities and organisation is to exist solely to help the individual Rotary Club advance the Object of Rotary and it should not tend to diminish services provided by Rotary Clubs and individual Rotarians on a local level.

Clusters - part of the District Leadership Plan is the appointment of Assistant Governors to assist the District Governor with the administration of designated Clubs. These Clubs are assembled into Clusters to enable a reasonable spread of the administrative workload. The Assistant Governor is the conduit between the Governor and the Club President and is there to support the Plans and Objectives and assist the Club President in carrying out the activities of the Club. The Assistant Governor is required to keep the Governor informed of the health of the Club and to make recommendations.

It must be remembered that Clusters not only exist for the administrative assistance to the District Governor, but they are also a sound vehicle for the bonding between members of the various Clubs and, in some cases, a great way of conducting a major project that is considered too large for one Club.

It is hoped this will provide a better understanding of the purpose of Rotary and where it fits in the overall scheme of things. It is hoped this will also serve to review your service to the community at large and assist in promoting membership to advance Rotary Service.

Lead the Way by expanding Rotary in your community.

D

DG Bernie Walshe & Margaret invite all Rotarians and partners to "Experience the Power of Rotary" at the District 9800 -  2007 Conference in Canberra.

Margaret and I have great pleasure in inviting you to our National Capital, Canberra, for the Rotary International District 9800, 2007 Conference.

We promise a program and a Rotarian experience that will both stimulate and entertain you.

Canberra's attractions are numerous and represent the treasures of our nation, with attractions including the Australian War Memorial, the Australian Institute of Sport, the National Gallery and Old Parliament House. From trendy Manuka with its stylish restaurants and boutiques to the beautiful surrounding bushland, wineries and golf course, there is something to please everyone.

Time away from work will be minimal, as we have chosen the Labour Day Weekend from 9th to 11th March. The Conference will be held on the Saturday and Sunday with a very special Welcome Function on Friday night at the award winning National Museum of Australia on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin.

Top speakers including Dr Andy Thomas, astronaut, the revered neurosurgeon, Professor Jeffrey Rosenfeld, concert pianist Alan Kogosowski, Commonwealth Games gold medallist and Aussie Super mum Kerryn McCann & Shelterbox inventor, Tom Henderson will inspire and inform.

Club Dinners will be held on the night of Saturday 10th March with the gala Dinner Dance concluding the conference on the Sunday evening. The Monday is a holiday in Victoria & you will be able to travel home ready for work on Tuesday, or take a few extra days to explore the fascinating attractions that Canberra has to offer.

Costs will be kept to minimum and the conference offers exceptional value. Drive from Melbourne in around seven hours with a rest stop at Albury, or you may prefer to fly or take the train. Along the way up or back enjoy the many attractions including the Snowy Mountains in Autumn, the stunning Gippsland Lakes, or the fantastic wineries in Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT. Canberra is also within easy reach of Sydney for those wanting to explore the harbour city.

The Conference will be presented with you, your partner and family in mind for an unforgettable experience that will hold long in your memory of a great weekend of Fun and Fellowship.

Please join us to Experience The Power of Rotary! in Canberra on the Labour Day Weekend, March 9th to 11th 2007.
