DG Bernie's Message

MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH

We have ambled through some of the programs for youth, mainly while they are at school. In this message, we talk about other projects that are provided to give our youth every opportunity for their development so they can proudly take their place in the community.

These are two worthwhile areas for youth to expand their capabilities once they have left high school are these are summarised as follows.

RYLA - Rotary Youth Leadership Award is a means of fostering community leadership ability and is a leadership training seminar for young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 years. It is an annual District program with no cost for participants where the attendees are sponsored by Rotary Clubs. This residential program is aimed at encouraging and developing leadership and social skills so that awardees can, more effectively, contribute to their communities in a practical manner.

Each Rotary Club is invited to sponsor potential leaders by providing financial support for a seminar of one week’s duration and by transporting them to and from the venue. Where possible, awardees should be invited to meet their sponsoring club members prior to the seminar and report back to them afterwards. It is also desirable to maintain contact with the Awardee as they can be a valuable resource for the development of ongoing youth programs.

In our District, a dinner is organised during the week where Rotarians are invited as visitors and the meal is catered by the Awardees who also make presentations that display parts of their week’s program. The seminar offers the opportunity of disseminating the Rotary ideal of service to the community as well as creating an awareness of the range of programs available though Rotary sponsorship. Supervision of the week long seminar, held in December each year, is the responsibility of the District RYLA committee.

Rotaract - is a strong international service club for young adults from ages 18 to 30 who have undertaken a commitment to serve their communities, be it at a local or international level. The Club is sponsored and supported by their local Rotary Club and the members of Rotaract seek to develop friendships and professional contacts that will enable them to address the physical and social needs of their communities. At the same time, members develop their own personal skills and knowledge.

It is the responsibility of District to appoint the Chair and committee that will organise new Rotaract Clubs, sustain the flow of communication between Rotary and Rotaract and to support annual training for the District Rotaract Representative who will lead the members in the ensuing year. Meetings are held bi-monthly and a Rotary presence is strongly recommended at each meeting to provide encouragement to the Rotaractors. I also look forward to consideration of joint projects between Rotary and Rotaract. Remember, Rotaractors would be great Rotarians of the future.

While the RYLA participation is very strong, I am promoting the establishment of new Rotaract Clubs in our District and we encourage Clubs to take up the challenge and address this proposal by inviting key persons to your Club to speak at one of your meetings.

Although details are in the District Directory, contact can be made with the following personnel regarding this program.
