DG Bernie's Message

PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH.

No matter how ardently we pursue good works for the betterment of local and world communities, these efforts will be wasted unless young people are prepared for the mantle of leadership and service when their time comes.

Rotary spends much time in preparing programs that prepare our youth for their adult life when they must take up the responsibility of citizenship and we therefore take special interest in developing the talents and enthusiasm of youth. Some of the programs have been aired in the past few weeks and this short summary gives a logical sequence to the process.

Interact – a program for service minded young people between the ages of 14 and 18 years or in the final years of their secondary schooling. Its purpose is to provide opportunities for young people to work together for the recognition and development of constructive leadership and personal integrity, the encouragement and practice of thoughtfulness and helpfulness to others. The recognition of dignity and value of all occupations are key objectives and they are encouraged to develop the knowledge and understanding of community, national and world affairs. Ideally, these Clubs are established in high schools.

RYPEN – Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment is a home grown product for young people between the ages of 14 and 17 years. Its stated aim is to communicate to young people a series of ideas, problems and social experiences that will assist them in forming their own values and moral standards and broaden their horizons culturally, socially and academically.

The program involves a supervised residential weekend seminar and nominations for this seminar result from an approach by Rotary Clubs to the local high school.

MUNA – the Model United Nations Assembly simulates the workings of the United Nations Assembly by having teams of two or three senior students represent a particular U.N. country in debates on matters of world political and social concern. The Assembly is about building bridges of goodwill for world peace and understanding through a personal involvement in the acceptance of situations that reflect the opinion of “adopted” countries. Students are challenged by the opportunities to extend research, debating and public speaking skills by addressing a wide range of contemporary, world focussed issues.

NYSF – National Youth Science Forum is a dynamic mix of seminars, debates, workshops, visits to laboratories and supervised social activities. It encourages excellence, helps develop communication and interpersonal skills, teaches time management and promotes the value of a balanced lifestyle. This Forum provides a unique experience for some 280 of Australia’s best Year 11 high school students who are interested in science. For two week during January, successful awardees come together in a stimulating environment enriched by the input of acknowledged experts in science and technology. They are challenged, enthused and explore scientific opportunities, identifying possible career paths for their own development.

With the addition of the Rotary Youth Exchange program, these are our provisions made for students in an endeavour to introduce responsible social interaction and it gives them the opportunities to develop their sense of fair play as well as preparing them for the rigors of life after high school.

We encourage all Clubs to support these programs for our New Generation to provide them with this opportunity to take their part as a responsible adult and maybe future leader in our global village.

Lead the Way by providing opportunities for our young people.

Declaration of Rotarians in Businesses and Professions

D

The Declaration of Rotarians in Businesses and Professions was adopted by the Rotary International Council on Legislation in 1989 to provide more specific guidelines for the high ethical standards called for in the Object of Rotary:

As a Rotarian engaged in a business or profession, I am expected to:

  • Consider my vocation to be another opportunity to serve;

  • Be faithful to the letter and to the spirit of the ethical codes of my vocation, to the laws of my country, and to the moral standards of my community;

  • Do all in my power to dignify my vocation and to promote the highest ethical standards in my chosen vocation;

  • Be fair to my employer, employees, associates, competitors, customers, the public, and all those with whom I have a business or professional relationship;

  • Recognize the honour and respect due to all occupations which are useful to society;

  • Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community;

  • Adhere to honesty in my advertising and in all representations to the public concerning my business or profession;

  • Neither seek from nor grant to a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship.

SEPTEMBER IS NEW GENERATIONS MONTH

  1. D9800 Success again in NYSF [National Youth Science Forum] but....HELP IS NEEDED

    On Saturday August 5 some 50 Year 11 students were interviewed for the 2007 National Youth Science Forum to be run in Canberra in January 2007. D9800 is normally allocated 16 places but largely because of the outstanding quality of the 2006 intake, we ended up being offered 17 places for Canberra and another 2 places for a similar Science School to be held in Auckland New Zealand in January 2007.

    Eventually the 19 students were selected; 10 males and 9 females and most have been supported by a Rotary Club; however due to a combination of a new On-Line Registration system and some Clubs literally being embarrassed by having too many students to support, some 3 very talented young Year 11 students are desperately seeking the support of a Club.

    If your Club is in the position to be able to offer any part of the overall fee of $1,725 ($500, $750, $1,000 or $1,500 are the amounts typically provided by a Club), could you please contact Keith Ryall URGENTLY.

    As the Chair of the National Youth Science Summer Schools has said,  "These young people will literally create the future and they may have to make some tough decisions. Tomorrows researchers will need more than scientific know-how. They'll need sound ethical judgement and good communication skills if they are to steer us towards a sustainable future".  Emeritus Prof John Sandeman OAM.

    Rotary Clubs have been magnificent in their support in the past; Keith Ryall has reassured those students, their parents and in some cases their teachers that somehow we will find the funds. Keith looks forward to your calls.
