VIDEO OF THE NEWSTEAD DREDGE

We are moving forward to purchasing a copy of the McGeorge films. At present we have arranged for someone to view the film and advise us on the preferred option of obtaining it. We are resolved to get a copy and look forward to being in a position to holding an evening to show it to interested people.

PARTY

It is at this time of the year that we get together for an evening in the courthouse. Over the past few years this has proved to be a popular event. This year the date is Saturday October 16th at 6.30 at the courthouse. We are fortunate to have such a wonderful venue and it lends itself well to be the setting for an evening’s get-together. Our arrangements are very simple – just bring yourself along with a plate of something to share and a drink if you wish. We have the fire going, the atmosphere is convivial and it is a chance to socialise and catch up with other members and their partners. We especially welcome any members who live at a distance and don’t get a chance to meet us very often. There is an excellent motel in town and spring in the goldfields area is special!

GARAGE SALE

As you know, we hold our Market Days twice a year and welcome donations for our ‘white elephant’ stall. We have been very fortunate this year to have an abundant offering thanks to the generosity of one of our members. In fact we have such a quantity that w have decided to have a pre-Market Garage Sale. The arrangements are to hold it on the same day as the Party. It will be in the morning of October the 16th, at the home of one of our members in Wyndham Street, Newstead.

VISIT BY THE MIDLANDS HISTORICAL SOCIETY

On Wednesday August 18th, we welcomed the Maryborough group to the courthouse. Earlier in the year we had enjoyed a visit to their headquarters at Worsley House. We were impressed by their collection as well as their hospitality on that occasion. It was therefore pleasing to be able to reciprocate. These sort of visits encourage us in our endeavours and give us ideas that we can incorporate into our system.

MARYBOROUGH FAMILY HISTORY GROUP

A Family and Local History Fair is to be held in Maryborough on Sunday the 19th of September between 10 am and 4 pm in the Exhibition Hall at the Maryborough Resource Centre on the corner of Nolan and Alma Streets. The price is $2 and children under 14 are free. Family History groups, genealogy and family history suppliers and local history groups will be there and internet access and help will be available. There will also be a guest speaker – Lady Teviot will be speaking about workhouses and medical conditions in the 19th century.

Our society will be in attendance in case some of our records can be of help to people seeking information on their family who may have had connections to the area of the former Newstead Shire.

NEXT EXCURSION

Our next excursion is a visit to the Public Records Office in 99 Shiel St North Melbourne. The date is Tuesday September 14th and we are expected there at 10.30 for a tour that will take about 2 hours. Members from our area plan to travel by train but if any members from other areas wish to join us, meet at the PRO at 10.20.  It would also be helpful to have an approximate idea of numbers so if you plan to come, could you please let me know? (Dawn Angliss 54762006) Train stations at Macaulay and North Melbourne are close by, bus by route 402 from the terminus opposite St Vincent’s Hospital (Victoria Parade) via Rathdowne and Shiel St – the closest stop just south of the intersection with Shiel St with buses running every 10 minutes and trams by route 57, 55 or 59.

After our tour of PRO  (and lunch in their cafeteria) we have been invited by one of Melbourne members to tour their premises in Fitzroy. This invitation is from Rose Chong who has run a Theatrical Costume business in Melbourne for more than 20 years. Rose tells us that the premises are of historical interest and the chance to see the fascinating world of costume design sounds great. Again we need to have an idea of numbers please.

The September meeting will be an evening one – September 20th at the courthouse at 7.30 pm (not 8 pm as stated in the last newsletter).
