Although it is reasonably easy to join the SES, there are a few requirements that you must meet before you can be approved to join a unit. You will need to undergo a police check that will ascertain if you have any serious convictions. If the check confirms any serious convictions for any crime you will not be approved to join the SES.
You will need to be reasonably fit, both mentally and physically. Some of the tasks we conduct require a clear mind to be able to make logical decisions under stressful situations. We sometimes work with other emergency services, such as the police, who require a very high level of professionalism from us.
We generally recommend that new members attend an open day and discuss any concerns with the unit members prior to signing any paperwork. During these open days you can speak with unit members and get a feel for the various types of work we do.
There is a degree of commitment required from you if you should decide to join the SES. We are required to be available to assist the local community should an incident occur. You need to understand that you will be required to attend regular training and turn up for callouts when you are on Duty Crew.
As well as Duty Crew members, we are also looking for non operational members to help out with PR and Fundraising and Administration duties.
