I actually had written a really riveting piece in my head on the way home from the game but, given it was still before midday (almost) and we had just suffered a loss, the content may have been a little on the dejected, frustrated, annoyed, angry side of things. And as the old saying goes “Never e-mail/sms/phone angry”
So I have taken a sit back this week and am now writing the match report with a clear head.
The Monash Whites travelled out to Gordon Ramsey Reserve which was to seemingly become a freezing ‘Hells Kitchen’ for the boys from Clayton. An early morning start for the “students” of Monash was going to be tough, but assuming Old Camberwell also uphold the Club 18 tradition of ‘Friday Night Drinks’, both teams were probably in the same boat.
Monash got off to the customary slow start, with Seb O the only Whites player seemingly switched on in the first few minutes. While some other players started to get into the action, the Grammers took the early lead and were never headed for the rest of the match.
Poor decision making, disposal and tackling (three fairly important areas of any football side) were the order of the day, especially heading into the forward line, and unfortunately this also had the added issue of showing up the lack of defensive run from the Whites. The second quarter showed this off markedly, but the Whites were still only 4 goals down and not completely out of it at half time.
The belief that this writer mentioned in the match report the week prior, needed to come to the fore in the third, and the boys knew it. Unfortunately, the talk at half time was just that, and the sloppy nature of the Whites game continued, and it seemed as if the team was chasing all day but never gaining anything. A 6.1 to 1.0 quarter saw the Whites lagging 9 goals down and virtually out of the game.
Lucka stressed to the boys to take something out of the game, win the quarter. And so the boys did, not convincingly but still the final siren went and the team had won the quarter by 5 points.
The Whites best players on the day were sparse, with Seb, Chuck, Roo, Ben, and Joey giving a good account of themselves.
With this wake up call behind them, training was hard on Tuesday night, as the boys started on the road of working for each other yet again.
As the Coach succinctly put it, “we just aren’t morning people”.
