And no I am not getting ahead of myself, we will hear more of it from the Monash boys, if they keep playing footy with the belief that they showed on the weekend ... (keep reading for more on that).
We are the Whites who strive for victory,
We are the team and we are strong,The day was perfect for footy, no wind, no rain, not cold enough that you freeze your nipples to that chaffing point and not so hot as to have conscientious players applying the SPF 30+.
For all the teams we'll meet and show them,
To think to beat us they are wrong.First quarter action saw a tight struggle that the Marcellin team, with some giants up forward, seemed to be on top of, despite what looked to be a similar brand of footy and talents at each coach’s disposal. A bleary eyed Coach Lucka pulled the boys aside before the game and encouraged teamwork, unlike his work colleagues and their unwillingness to put the team before the individual need. This speech seemed to work with players running to space for each other and helping out as an option for the hands from a tight pack.
Unfortunately the disposal around the ground, and especially into the forward 50 was as dodgy as Seb’s red boots, constantly putting players out of position and exposing the Whites going the other way. Luckily the Marcellin giants couldn’t kick and kept Monash in the game, and in fact in front at quarter time, in a large part thanks to an inspired 10 min burst from JO’D, hangover free and ‘on time’ this week.
We always play together as a team,
And we're always for the ball.Inaccuracy marred both teams again in the second quarter, and if not for the strong work down back from Seb and Offy (who was definitely ON in his role across halfback), and the run from Chuck (will get to ‘that GOAL’ in a moment), Weasel and Rhino Austerberry, the scores may have looked more lopsided as the half time hooter went. Speaking of hooters ... oh no, that’s not our Club 18 side ... I shall continue. Slick work up forward from Goody kept the Whites in touch to half time with some great run and carry. His four majors for the day were outstanding in close to a BOG effort (if not for ‘that GOAL’). The Whites went in at the half, four points down, after losing the second quarter by seven points.
We play it hard,
We play it fair,
We never shirk,It was fair to say that at half time the Monash boys knew they were in it and needed to just find some poise going forward. The run needed to continue and the talk had been good for most of the day, except in the huddle and before the game (for a “bunch of academics”, none of us like to talk much), but a lift was required. . . ‘sustain the pressure and it will come’. . . and the signs were again there, with some strong running and tackling, Charlie (before ‘that GOAL’) almost buried a guy deep within the sand turf. Unfortunately, Cosi was also a victim early in the third, sustaining a concussion after attacking the ball strongly at half forward and being pinned to the turf. Hopefully he will be fine for the upcoming rounds as his hard work around the packs is vital. A fine goal on the run by Bubbles Johnstone, helped keep the game tight, but despite the hard work the Whites again lost the quarter, this time by two points. One goal down, 6 fewer scoring shots, but a belief that with hard work they could get over the line.
We're always there.
We are the mighty Monash Whites.Going into the last the battle was epic. Players were putting in second and third efforts to ensure easy possessions weren’t easy to come by. Stevie Z ran hard all day, and the back half stood up. The midfielders, led by Captain Roo, added defence to their bow for the quarter, and the forwards didn’t let the ball out easily. However, inaccuracy threatened to derail the hard work, with three of the best kicks at the club narrowly missing shots in succession from directly in front. . . Enter Charlie “What’s a drop punt?” Smibert, with ‘that GOAL’. After running 150m from the last line of defence, Chuck took possession of the ball about 50m out on an obtuse angle. He then proceeded to dodge two or three Marcellin giants, duck under the grasp of another two and baulk the 6th defender, before letting fly with a checkside, banana, barrel floater, that sailed through the middle. This put the Monash boys only a few points up, before a tense last 5 mins saw Marcellin’s wayward kicking at goal leave them two points shy.
Despite having five less scoring shots, it is fair to say, that with only nine players on the team sheet for the day having played more than 50 games for the ‘Whites’, it is a testament to the Coach and the hard work of the team, which at the moment sees us finishing off games, something almost unheard of until recent times. The belief that we deserve to win these games not the opposition, is apparent, and only builds strength and unity within the group to go all the way.
