On a blustery day at Monash University, Oval 2: the new ‘Domain of Pain’, (excepting Round 1, but that was just a blemish), just a few ovals down from the once prestigious Oval 1: Cotton Wool (‘Domain of AFL Umpires’), an eternally ‘new looking’ Monash Whites/Blues (The Blights) took to the field for a cross town match up with Mazenod OC (Norm always uses it in his pre-game spiel, not that travel affects us as much as say a trip to Perth to play at Subiaco, or from Perth to play, well anywhere, for the Dockers)
The wind had built up remarkably over the near hour and a half (two hours for early birds such as myself: idiot) from when players arrive to the opening horn. Favouring the away side in the first quarter, the normally slow starting Blights needed to ensure that this was not the case, or they would go in under a lot of pressure with a fuming Coach to boot. Luckily, despite some players missing (Goodfellow – Sobering up, JOD – Most likely Sobering Up, Seb – Working, etc) the team managed to compete remarkably against the wind and came into the first break up by 3 points, thanks to some solid work by Moffy and Jim up forward, little man Bort, and defensive group who performed courageously all day. Travis Austerberry was running hard into the wind and pushing back with it to help out, owning his wing all day.
In the Second, the boys used the wind to near perfection, with 5.6 to 2.0, to open up a solid half time lead. More accurate shots on goal would have had the contest over there and then. Micky P was providing first option football lessons for anyone who wanted to watch (opposition and teammates alike) and Costello and Captain Roo were getting the job done out of the middle, reading the big man’s (Keeta) work superbly. Unfortunately Moffy went the way of his name sake and was sitting on the sidelines nursing an injury (ankle soreness) having slotted 3 first half goals as a strong focal point up forward.
With the third quarter came a challenge from Coach Lucka. “Keep them goalless”. Now his actual edict may have been “Keep them scoreless” but keeping the opposition to only one point, with a 4 goal wind, deserves to be considered a win, so let’s give the boys that, shall we. Smibert was strong across half back. Johnstone joined Austerberry in owning the wings; the former providing some long accurate kicking against the hurricane and taking what would be described as a strong contested mark over two opponents. I can verify this as I was there, however, as this may be a first in 109 games for Monash (by his own admission), Bubbles must have thought he was in wide open spaces on the wing at the time. With the challenge of keeping the opposition scoreless finished with and the game virtually over, the Blighters returned to some bad old habits in the first 10 mins of the last quarter, losing the switch and direction into the forward 50. It was good, however, to see the leadership of some of the senior players in helping to straighten things up. At the final stanza the Blights had doubled the opposition's score in what could be described as a hard fought win for a half against the wind, and a solid performance against a middle of the road opposition, for the other two quarters.
