This caused some late re-shuffling of the side, with many new faces once again making their debuts. The boys were itching to get into it after last week's uninspiring victory against the undermanned Nobs. One player who I won't shame (Mark 'Splinter' Woods), was more keen than the rest and arrived at the ground 4 hours before kickoff. Perhaps he was afraid to incur the wrath of Coach Lucka's dreaded cut off time. Maybe Splint can pass on his alarm clock to some of his team mates that are struggling under the new regime.
Onto the game. On a perfect day for footy, with little to no breeze, the game started in an arm wrestle. The Whites controlled the first few minutes but continually fell down across half forward and were unable to exert any scoreboard pressure. Whitefriars went forward twice for two goals, and suddenly the Whites' desire to win a first quarter was looking decidedly shaky. Unlike previous weeks, however, the boys turned it around and managed to sneak a one point lead at the first change courtesy of a nice finish from splint just before the siren. A worrying sign, however, was Whitefriars efficiency when going forward with 4 straight goals from not many entries.
The quarter time huddle was full of positives, with the Whites, albeit marginally, achieving their aim of leading at quarter time. The second quarter would see much greater reward for effort. The onballers, ably led by Roo and Cosi, were winning their share of the in and under ball. Trav out on a wing was providing plenty of run and Kinners up forward was applying the finish. By halftime, the Whites had opened up a handy 5 goal lead.
During the main interval it was stressed on the boys not let up on their intensity and attack on the ball. Late in the 2nd quarter it appeared the floodgates could open as the Whites appeared to be running Whitefriars off their feet. Four goals to one in the 3rd and the contest was effectively over. Monty up forward was proving to be a good target, providing a contest in the air and also when the ball hit the deck. Highlight of the quarter was a comment made by one of the friars - "There's so many of them running through the middle" (or words to that effect). This showed the effect a committed team effort can have on our opposition.
The last quarter saw the Whites continue their domination. Benny never stopped running and continually was the spark that ignited counter attacks off half back, while Speeches finally got his wish to be released into the midfield. For the first time this season, the Whites played a solid four quarters with everyone contributing to a fantastic win. The run through the middle and the continual attempts to switch play were most encouraging. Let's hope it is a sign of things to come. No Glendenning medals awarded this week, for it was a team effort that got us the four points.
This week, the mighty Whites return home to face Mazenod, at the normal time of 11.40. The game is a chance for the boys to cement themselves inside the top four. As always, all supporters and hangers on are encouraged to attend.
