Match Report: The start of the 2009 season saw the Whites taking on our fellow students, Uni Blacks, on the familiar surrounds of Oval 2. The rivalry between the two sides has grown in recent years with the Whites knocking Blacks out on Preliminary Final weekend, two years running. With this in mind, the Whites knew we would be in for a tough game.

The day got off to a bad start, however, courtesy of a faulty alarm clock, that would see three late changes to the team. With a number of players making their first appearance for the club, plus an influx of Blues players, introductions took up a vast majority of the pre-game.

In perfect conditions, the season was finally underway. The first 5 mintues were an arm wrestle, with both teams keen to exert themselves. Harder running and polished skills saw Blacks begin to control the game. Four goals into a slight breeze, and some inaccurate finishing from the Whites would leave the boys almost 4 goals down at the first change. Coach Colombies couldn't fault the team's endeavour in the first quarter, but basic skill errors would prove costly. The work of Keeta in the ruck and Muncha around the packs were highlights. But it would take a lot more than 2 players if the Whites were to get back in the game.

In the 2nd quarter the Whites finally began to find some run and flowing football that we had practised all pre-season. The first goal of the season came from veteran little man, Bort, who may have been fired up (not that it takes much to make him angry) by Lucka "forgetting" to name him in the team prior to the game. The highlight of the quarter, however, was Richo launching himself at least 5cm off the ground to take a towering pack mark in the goal square. He would calmly go back to slot the goal from a tight angle. While the Whites were working extremely hard to get back in the game, their progress was hindered by continually giving up easy goals to their opponents, as too often the backmen were finding themselves outnumbered.

At halftime the Whites were 4 goals down, but by no means out of the game. Muncha continued his strong work in and under and would be rewarded with his first goal for the Whites. Von and Seb across half back were providing stout resistance, however, 3 goals to 1 in the third quarter would leave the boys facing an uphill battle.

There were plenty of positive vibes at 3 quarter time, with the Whites having the belief we could still run over the top of the boys from Melbourne. It was not to be, as Blacks put on 7 goals to run out comfortable 72 point winners. Tireless captain Roo never stopped trying and would kick the Whites only 2 goals of the quarter to finish the day with 3. Former captain West tried to ignite the boys with a run down the wing. Unfortunately, his much younger opponent, merely put it in second and mowed him down.

This week sees the mighty Whites head to Brighton to try and get our season back on track. As always, family, friends, acquaintances, colleagues, neighbours, are most welcome to come support the boys. A reminder for those named in the team, to ensure alarm clocks are working.
