With a number of players sitting out proceedings due to various niggles and ailments, this was a chance for Coach Colombies to tinker with personnel and also a chance for players to prove their worth heading into week one of what will be a tough finals campaign. However, Old Trinity's recent results were not lost on the group, with the OTs displaying some spirited performances. The Whites would need to be on their toes from the outset, and the focus was certainly there from the first bounce.
Off to a good start, the Whites came out of the blocks with a four goal to one first term. Some strong bodywork by the Density in the goal square saw him add two of the majors, whilst down back some gritty defence led by Nick Rhoden and 'The Rock' Von Moger ensured opportunities were sparse for the opposition.
Continuing this trend well into the second term, the backs were rebounding well, and giving the Whites' runners use of the ball heading forward. Johnno's silky boot wreaked severe damage out on the wing, and Joe Speekman was working hard both at the stoppages and when found in space. A stand out target across the half forward line emerged in Micky P, his strong hands and quick, neat disposal a clearly advantageous outlet for the side heading into the scoring zone.
The half time message from Coach Colombies focused on a need to unleash the switch. With no excuses for average disposal on what was a stellar deck at the Marles Playing Fields, banishment of skill errors was paramount in order to execute lateral movement and prise open the Trinity defences.
Despite being outscored in the third term, this focus on playing to a game plan proved to be a positive for the day, as the Whites posted more scoring shots than their opponents with inaccuracy in front of goal the only let down. Chooka Coughlin and Bort Collier were combining dangerously when entering the fifty, with creativity at a premium. As the contest became more willing with the Trinity resurgence, Damien 'Bustling Barry' West was on hand to throw his weight around, and got on the end of a superb piece of play to register a cheeky major. Keeta Perry decided to eventually show up, and had immediate impact in the ruck, and Speeches O'Dwyer continued to chase hard out of the backline and frustrate his opponent with endless chatter.
A more skilful final term saw the Whites run out 49-point victors. With continuous rotations off the bench, and some key players rested up, it should be fresh legs all round' heading into Sunday's do-or-die clash with Old Brighton.
On a final note, congratulations to Captain Courageous Chooka on his fifth best and fairest title, taken out on Saturday evening at the Carringbush. Special mention to 'The Monk' Costello and 'Chucka' Smibert on their stellar seasons and well-deserved 'equal runner up' honours.
Turning our attention to a fourth consecutive finals campaign, all are looking forward to a BIG WEEK ON THE TRACK - IT'S 'GO TIME' FOR THE WHITES!
