Match Report: After an impressive show of grit and determination to overcome finals contenders Old Camberwell on Round 13 Reunion day, this week saw the Whites travel across town to take part in the Tertiary Tussle with old rivals University Blacks.

After two stirring come-from-behind wins against the old foe in 2008, the Blacks turned out as a pumped-up unit looking for revenge in the 09' Round 1 clash. Revenge they got, thumping a hapless Whites outfit by 72 points. Nearing the business end of the season, both sides will be serious finals contenders, and the Whites were out to show that round one was but a minor bump in the road, and they can in fact match it with the league leaders.

Again the wind was up, this time blowing consistently across the Crawford Oval from the Coburg direction. It seemed something else had blown in on the breeze prior to kick-off, with Lachie 'Neutral' Smith unexpectedly turning up for a game, sleep deprived from his late-night dash down from the Victorian alps. Other handy inclusions for the Whites included Rob 'Density' Moffatt who had also graciously elected to avoid the state's alpine areas and his fiancée duties this particular weekend, as well as a plethora of 'Blues Two's' all in search of some game time after plugging holes on the Frearson over the uni break.

The first term saw the Whites off to a notoriously slow start, with the Blacks turning in a good return from a quarter kicking up the hill and against the breeze. The Whites backline was struggling somewhat with the sheer weight of numbers the Blacks were running forward with, whilst up forward the tall timber was being missed, with 'Density' often left to his own devices amongst a Black sea of defenders. Monkey Costello again showed the hardness and dedication he is renowned for, taking multiple defensive marks under pressure, and running the lines with his head over the pill. Unfortunately despite some help from Captain Chooka and Veteran Weezle, as well as some strong work from Rama when unleashed late in the quarter, he didn’t have too many friends up until the break.

Two late majors had kept the Colonials in touch with the Mandelas at quarter time, and Coach Colombies was at pains to point out that the intensity needed to lift. A solid response from the side saw the Whites pull back early in the second, before letting slip two crucial goals later on in the half.

Out from the rooms at half time the Whites looked to improve and take more advantage of the scoring end. The backline was starting to clamp down and find their run, with Seb 'Arch' O'Meara showing plenty of fight, and 'Neutral' Smith clearly taking advantage of a few days in the mountain air en route to a commanding display of 'backmanship'. The intensity and urgency filtered through the side, and soon Keeta Perry was dominating the ruck, and Joe 'Diamond' O'Dwyer executing some superb delivery into the forward line. By the time the final break rolled around, the Whites had cut the deficit to 19 points, and the game was well and truly alive.

The final term started in a good old fashioned arm wrestle, and saw the Blacks pull away slightly, however not from a lack of contest from a Whites side hell-bent on a respectable result. Unfortunately the Whites could not make inroads into the breeze, and the Blacks were able to register a 34 point victory. The general consensus amongst the group post match was that we were not disgraced, and save a poor start and some skill errors, the Whites were always in the hunt. Relishing a hard contest played in competitive spirits, this was truly a taste of what's to come in the finals; better off for it, the Whites will be ready to rumble in two weeks' time. But first: Old Trinity to round out the season proper.
