Match Report: Alec Gillon Oval, Brunswick … (shudder). No doubt the thoughts of many of the Whites prior to the Round 12 clash with the 'NOB's' were centred on the growing legacy of this venue, and what it has held for the Whites in the past. Most recently a semi final loss to St Bernard's had shaken the side, the effects evident in the score line of the rematch in thhe Grand Final . However, that was now all in the past, and this clash - with a different enemy - was a chance to exorcise some demons, and turn around our fortunes on a ground that could play host to finals matches in a months' time.

Leading this 'exorcism' in his 150th game for the club would be none other than Mark 'Splinta' Woods. A veteran and stalwart of Whites outfit, he would become that day the first player in club history to play the entirety of his milestone at Club XVIII level, perhaps the finals series of 2002 best highlighting the extent of his on-field 'shamanistic' qualities.

As the Whites pulled onto the freeway and made the long trip across town, the weather gods certainly did their best to conjure up some apocalyptic conditions, with winds reaching gale force proportions in the lead up to the first bounce. This gave the step-in coaching outfit of Mickey P and Mick Crossland (combining to form the 'Penis Stinger' super coach duo) plenty to think about tactically, with the clear instruction being to use the far side of the ground in moving the ball. Fittingly, the game started with the play predominantly being restricted to the opposite side, as both teams battled the sheer force of the windy conditions; on to plan B….'wait, there is no plan B'. Well, it didn’t matter, as the Whites used the ball best for the term to open a 20-something point lead, whilst restricting their opponents to a scoreless quarter.

On a day when clean handling and accurate aerial judgement were at a minimum, the Whites showed superior skill and willingness to run the ball, and by the time the second quarter got underway, the cross winds had developed into 'Hurricane Whites'. The Whites backline led the charge, developing an impenetrable wall across the NOB's forward perimeter, and guarding it feverishly. 'The Rock' Von Moger epitomised this defensive stance, linking up repeatedly with Chas 'Brownlow' Smibert and Matt 'Weasel' Riddle to switch the play away from congested areas, and run the ball forward. The Weasel was playing his normal commanding role, and was a catalyst in his willingness to take on the conditions and use the switch, repeatedly giving the midfield linkmen the advantage of space to work in. Nick 'Monkey' Costello again proved more than handy in the tight midfield battles, and Paul 'Chooka' Coughlin, Matthew Johnstone, and Trav Austerberry revelled in their freedom when released into space.

By the time the main break rolled around, the commitment of the Whites had pushed their lead out significantly. The third and fourth terms offered no respite for the NOB's, who were struggling to match the tactics employed by the 'Penis Stinger' brains trust. Up forward, Hurricane Whites continued to tear apart the scoreboard, with Coughlin getting forward for three majors, Jim 'Bob' Sheldon continuing his good form with three of his own, and owing to some sublime finishing by the likes of Rob 'Den-city' Moffatt, 'Lumpy' Lombardo, and Christian 'The House of Strauss' Strauss. However, without doubt the day belonged to Mark 'the exorcist' Woods, who spent the afternoon terrorising the NOB's backmen, slotting a couple of cool majors from distance, and supplying his fellow forwards with some silver service delivery. Using all his guile and experience from 150 starts, the Splinter rallied the Whites troops and stirred them to a workmanlike 81 point victory.

With the exorcism complete, the legacy of Alec Gillon Oval is no more. However, the Whites' next assignment is an all important clash with Old Camberwell at home. On the coveted 'Reunion Day', and with several further milestones' to be played out, a solid week on the track is of the highest importance. Carn' you mighty Whiters!
