The side was again short on numbers due to injury, illness and absence, and with some wet and windy conditions there was no room for heavy legs.
The Whites started well in the first term, dealing with the slippery conditions with a touch more class than their opponents. From the outset the back six outlined their intent, and seldom did Whitefriars get a chance on goal. Some solid work from Lachie ‘the bigger smith’ Smith and Ryan Austenberry kept the Friars’ to one major for the term, whilst Chuck Smibert and Seb O’Meara provided their customary run off half-back. As a result the forwards were getting a good look at it and the Whites went in with a handy 20-point lead at the first change.
The boggy conditions began to take their toll on both sides in the second term, with some heavy legs and a slippery pill reducing the game into more of a scrap. However, with the on-ball brigade fighting hard for it, and Jim ‘Polly’ Sheldon palming down some beauties in the ruck, the Whites were again able to outscore their opponents in a tightly fought quarter. Paul ‘Chooka’ Coughlin provided the experience and sure-hands required in the middle, and Rob ‘Den-city’ Moffatt and Bryce ‘De Bortoli’ Collier fought just as hard in the forward half to keep the scoreboard pressure on.
The massage from Coach Colombies at the long break was not to let the opponent get back into the contest, urging his troops to dictate terms and shut down the game by doing so. However, a momentary lapse of reason at the commencement of the third term saw the 'Friars throw on a couple of quick majors to climb back in to the contention for the points. Sensing this challenge and rising to it, the Whites clicked back into gear midway through the quarter, eventually matching the three goals the Friars’ had managed, to limit the damage done to their half time lead. Jason ‘Lindsay’ Heatley undoubtedly sparked the resurgence with a brilliantly committed chase and tackle, and the likes of ‘Monkey’ Costello and Mark “Splinter’ Woods kept providing the side with plenty of drive going into three quarter time.
From there it was all the Whites, as the side set about putting the game beyond reach in the final term. Soon enough ‘Den-city’ Moffat and Boris ‘Yeltzen’ Collier had ten majors between them, Moffat's set shot accuracy a feature of his own bag of six. Special mention to Goldy and Nick who found their way back ‘home’ and played important roles in the undermanned side, and of course to Captain Courageous Coughlin, who’s intensity all day led the side to their eighth win of the season.
Next up – a trip out north to take on the NOBs in another important encounter.
