Match Report: This weeks’ match saw the Whites back at home after a lacklustre performance north of the city against Fitzroy. The corresponding game against Old Brighton earlier in the season had been a tense one, the Whites storming home to win by three points on that occasion. However, with the ‘Tonners’ challenging for a finals spot towards the pointy end of the season, this was always going to be a tough contest.

Unfortunately, due to injury and absence, the Whites suffered some late withdrawals pre-game and started with just two players on the pine. Numbers were reduced further after ‘Disco Joe’ O’Dwyer twinged a hamstring with his first attack on the pill. Against a Brighton side displaying a clear advantage in height, the plan was to use a ‘run and carry’ style to exploit this. In a strongly contested first term the Whites held their own, however, Old Brighton went into the break with a narrow lead. Dan ‘the sermon’ O’Dwyer was showing plenty of dash and courage off half-back, with ‘Lumpy’ Lombardo getting plenty of the ball around the stoppages.

The second term saw the Whites make more of an impact on the scoreboard, however, Old Brighton again proved more potent up forward, their lead extending to 30 points going into the main break. Had it not been for the guile of Seb ‘Cellar Dweller’ O’Meara and Chuck Smibert down back, the situation at half time could have been a lot worse.

The sentiment at the long break was that this deficit (or ‘defecate’ as it is known in some parts1) was by no means insurmountable. With this in mind the third term started full of promise with a couple of majors, before a string of unfortunate errors gifted Old Brighton a few goals to steady the ship. Against the tide, ‘The Rock’ Von Moger put in another consistent and honest effort on the ball, and Jimmy Sheldon worked tirelessly in the ruck all day. Chuck Smibert tried to lift the side with his attack on the footy and trademark speed running from defence and Chooka Coughlin provided some spark up forward with three majors. However, with the majority of forwards outnumbered and outsized, converting positive play into scoreboard pressure proved too difficult for the Whites throughout the game.

The final term only moved to compound the situation, the final margin stretching out to a highly disappointing eighty-point drubbing. No doubt this is a serious wake-up call for the side, who must improve considerably on this performance in the remaining home and away games. With disappointing numbers on the track in recent weeks, all players are encouraged to get down for both Tuesdays and Thursdays. Up next: Whitefriars at home.
