Melbourne University Rifles Association

Historical Notes

Melbourne University Rifles was formed on 5 March 1910, however its antecedents can be traced back to 1884. The Regiment was organised to provide military training for undergraduates and officer training for selected personnel.

During World War One, the Regiment provided 23 officers and 771 other ranks for the AIF. A further 180 gained commissions on active service.

The Regiment's contribution in World War Two was even greater. 1162 officers and many other ranks joined the 2nd AIF. A further 180 gained commissions on active service.

The Unit was resurrected in 1948, as the Melbourne University Regiment ("MUR").
