Youth of the Year 2009

The Lions Club of Camperdown encourages students from year 10 up from the local colleges to apply to be part of the Lions Youth of the Year (Sponsored by the National Australia Bank).

Hugh Saunders and Jacob Monk of the Mercy Regional College and Alex Gordon and Emma Drake of Camperdown College were the contestants in this year's (Club Level) Youth of the Year .

The students were interviewed during the day by judges on their hopes and aspirations, abilities and deportment and that part of the contest was worth up to 80 points.  After dinner, the students showed their ability in the Public Speaking arena which was worth up to a further 20 points.

The Public Speaking was held at the R.S.L Club where the general public, lions members and the contestants' families were very welcome to attend.

Lions are extremely grateful to the judges (Ray Jackson, NAB Manager Colac, Pam Coulihan and Rob Van Den Eynde) for giving up their valuable time and for their careful and thoughtful adjudicating of all stages of the competition.

Each contestant answered two impromptu questions to the best of their ability.

After the last contestant finished these questions, the students were then asked to deliver a prepared speech on a subject of their own choice.

Alex Gordon's speech was on the need for people to make the most of every opportunity.

Hugh Saunders argued humorously that video games and computer gaming were not the "Tools Of Hell" that many thought them.

Emma Drake asked the serious question of: What does it mean to be Australian?

Jacob Monk was concerned with the abject poverty of the African Nations.

The overall winner of the competition was Alex Gordon with Hugh Saunders winning the Public Speaking.

(Update:- Congratulations to Alex for his tremendous effort. He not only won at club level but won the region final at Skipton as well. He competed at District level on March 21st 2009 at Portland but unfortunately was unplaced.)

Again congratulations to all the students for their efforts, it was incredibly hard for the judges to adjudicate such a wealth of talent.
