The Lions Club of Camperdown was chartered in September 1979 with
25 members. Many of the members had young families which helped
unite the club. Working bees were well attended and often extended
into social events.
In the early 1980’s the club was responsible for rejuvenating Camperdown's Botanic Gardens which had fallen into disrepair and been opened
to cattle grazing. Eventually the council took responsibility for
the upkeep of the gardens with Lions helping wherever possible.
Other events organised by the Lions Club during the 80’s
include a Lakeside Carnival in the summer and also an annual Country
Music Festival which unfortunately due to the high cost was not
viable.
During the early 1990’s the first females were inducted as
members which helped consolidate the club. The Club also became more
involved with the smaller community based projects such as Meals
On Wheels.
The turn of the century has seen the club strengthen its membership
which currently sits at 34. Socially the club enjoys many outings
and this has helped balance the hours members put into community projects,
and it remains a very happy and energetic club although the average
age of membership is increasing.
As time passes, fewer young people feel the need to join a Service
Club, as they consider them outdated and time consuming, forcing many to fold due to lack of members. However Camperdown
Lions believe that its future is in youth and each year has been
fully involved in the “Youth of the Year” program and
has hosted many overseas students in the “Lions Youth Exchange”
program.
Quite a few members over the years have risen to participate at
district level and in 2009 the Camperdown Lions Club is hosting the
201V2 Multiple District Convention which highlights the commitment and involvement
of the club at all levels of Lionism.
