Report |

| Walking
tracks still 'closed' by Parks Vic. 1. Eskdale Spur - track indistinct in places below Michell Hut site due to fires. Snow pole line intact above. About 20cm compact snow cover (from below hut ruins to summit). 2. Staircase Spur - some snow poles burnt/fallen/missing at top of ridge making route- finding in poor visibility difficult on the descent. Walking track easy to follow (and mostly clear of debris) from below tree line to bottom of ridge. About 20cm compact snow cover from Bivouac Hut to Summit. 3. Pole line from summit ridge to Cleve Cole Hut intact. 4. Composting Loos at CCH still 'closed' due to fire damage. |

| "I can confirm in
the flight I had with Steve Baird that Michelles had burnt completely. I could not see Bivouac hut so cannot confirm." |
19/2/03 | Chris Rose |
| "You may have also heard from the intrepid Gibb aviators, that as well as The Michell Refuge, Federation Hut on Feathertop, and Ropers have also been lost. Apparently Bivouac, Johnstons, Kellys and Fitzgeralds are still standing. | 16/2/03 | Bill Rennie |
| "Further news,
I spoke to Allan who has now completed his reconnisiance. Michelle hut is burnt to the ground as is Federation although the Toilet at the Federation site still stands. The Cole is OK although evidence of fire was within a couple of meters of the hut." |
13/2/03 | John Antonello |
| "Re the Cole, Alan Gray accompanied by the Gibb bros will fly over the Cole this morning on a reconnaissance flight. They propose to make an aerial inspection of the the Michelle, Cole, Johnson, Federation, Wallace, Cope etc. Allan plans to use s Piper Seminole (twin engine) rather than his favoured Helicopter so the info gathered will be visual only but I'm sure very reliable." | 13/2/03 | John Antonello |
| "Steve Baird from Bogong Horseback Adventures hitched a chopper ride with Chris Rose, Head Ranger, Parks Vic, last weekend. He reported to me yesterday that Cleve Cole Hut & it's $50,000 toilet block are intact. Unfortunatley he was on the wrong side of the chopper to see Michell ot Bivouac Huts." | 12/2/03 | Peter Vodicka |
Recent bushfires in the Alpine areas:
At this stage we have no firm information about bushfires in the Mt. Bogong area. The map images below are based on satellite imaging of bushfire hotspots, as available on the CSIRO's Sentinel Bush Fire Mapping site at: http://sentinel.csiro.au/mapping/viewer.htm .
Cleve Cole Hut Area before the bushfires.
How the NASA Earth
Observation Satellite Terra works: Sentinel Fire currently obtains data from the NASA Earth
Observation Satellite Terra. Plans are well advanced to include data from other
satellites in the near future. The satellite orbits the Earth collecting data in a path
2330 km wide. It passes over Australia at least once a day but sometimes the
track alignment provides up to three passes. You can get details of where the
satellite passes overhead each day from the Space
Science and Engineering Centre for Terra – Australian tracking predictions
website. The raw image data is received by the Australian Centre for
Remote Sensing (ACRES) Data Acquisition Facility at Alice Springs. The data
is processed by a dedicated server to create a surface temperature image known
as the MOD14 product. The algorithms used in producing the thermal image are
described on the NASA
MODIS Fire and Thermal Anomalies webpage. Locations of high temperature are identified and extracted
from the image into a small text file and transmitted from Alice Springs to
Canberra where they are fed into a spatial database. From there the data can
be queried and added to dynamically created maps using a web-based mapping system.
Satellite observed hotspots since early January 2003.
