August/September 2002 Production:  ANTIGONE

by Sophocles
Directed by Gino Tomisich

The Moreland Theatre Company was in 2002 in it's fourth year of producing the Greek classics. Starting with Euripides The Women of Troy, followed by Aristophanes' Lysistrata, and 2001's acclaimed production of Euripides' Medea, Sophocles' Antigone was staged from August 22nd to September 7th 2002, Thursday night through to Saturday night, at the Mechanics Institute Performing Arts Centre Sydney Road Brunswick.

Antigone written over 2500 years ago is perhaps one of the best known of the great classical Greek tragedies. It was this play that made Sophocles a force and intellect to be reckoned with in his own lifetime, and the same is true to this day. The story is simplicity itself, a young woman decides to bury her brother against the orders of the King. This act brings her into direct confrontation with the King and State for she has broken the law, yet she is obeying a higher law.

The tragedy of Antigone is one that could face each of us. What does happen when an individual confronts the State with their beliefs? Gino Tomisich's exciting production will challenge a modern audience to think about these matters.

Antigone performance dates were August 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31 and September 5, 6, 7 2002at 8.00 pm. Venue: Mechanics Institute Performing Arts Centre (Cnr Sydney/Glenlyon roads Brunswick, Melways 29-G8). Tickets: $15 Full $10 Concession. Bookings number: (03) 9388-1942.
