Classical Greek Tragedy
Opening on 12 June, Moreland Theatre Company presents Sophocles Antigone, translated into English by E.F. Watling.
Directed by Karim Shaker, the cast brings youthful enthusiasm and considerable theatrical experience to this production, and is committed to making this play relevant and understandable to a modern audience. In the days preceding the start of the action of the play, the city-state of Thebes has been at war. Antigone's brother Polyneices has raised a powerful army to invade Thebes - leading to his own death and that of his younger brother Eteocles. King Creon orders that Eteocles shall be buried with full honours, but Polyneices - whom he regards as a traitor - must be left to rot on the battlefield "a feast of flesh for keen-eyed carrion birds". Which should take precedence - the King's law or divine law? If he is not properly buried, Polyneices cannot pass on to the afterlife, and the Gods will take grave offence. Antigone decides to take matters into her own hands, even if this means disobeying her King. Creon feels he must defeat Antigone. At stake is not only the order of the state, but his pride and sense of himself as a king and a man. Antigone's rebellion is especially threatening because it upsets gender roles and hierarchy. By refusing to be passive, she overturns one of the fundamental rules of her culture. Antigone will be performed at the Mechanics Institute Performing Arts Centre, corner of Glenlyon Road & Sydney Road, Brunswick, on 12-14 and 19-21 June (Thursday to Saturday) at 8.00 pm, (finishing about 9.45 pm) with a 2.00 pm matinee on Sunday 15 June (finishing about 3.45 pm). Tickets are $20 waged, $15 unwaged. Bookings (except groups): telephone 9388 1942. Places Please: The Victorian Community
Theatre Conference 2008
Proposals are sought from individuals and community groups interested in presenting at Victoria's first community theatre conference to be hosted by Moreland Theatre Company in July, 2008.
"Community theatre" is theatre made by people for their community, and, as such, can play an important role maintaining and developing culture, as well as adding to the social capital of the community. For these reasons, it is important for community theatre to be kept alive, and for community groups to build connections with other groups, to work towards a sustainable community theatre for tomorrow.
In 2008, Moreland Theatre Company* will host Victoria's very first community theatre conference exploring the topic "building a sustainable community theatre". The purpose of this conference will be to create a dialogue within and amongst amateur and community theatre practitioners about the how we can develop and maintain a sustainable community theatre, amidst a fast-changing technology-dependent society.
Proposals are sought from interested individuals and community groups who have something to say about their experiences in community theatre in its current state, and the direction it could take into the future. Submissions should contain a brief outline of the presentation, a current resume and contact details for the applicant.
For more information on the conference and/or ideas for discussions topics, contact Monique on 0404-416352 email spiralprd@yahoo.com.au, or Vikki on 0417-394514 email vikkidee@gmail.com.
