Our club was formed in 1993 under the sponsorship of the Rotary Club of Box Hill with the object of providing a means for men and women in the Mont Albert area to meet regularly for social and educational purposes.
The Rotary Club invited local people to a meeting held at the Hotham Street Uniting Church to consider starting a Probus Club. The idea was keenly supported and various people indicated that they were prepared to join a committee to run such a club. This group met again and drew up the following committee:
President Colin Barraclough
Vice President Margery Kyte-Powell
Secretary Beryl Pettingill
Treasurer Eric McKinnon
Committee Dorothy Cook, Morris Smith, Peter McAdam, John Mackey
A second general meeting at Hotham Street accepted this self appointed committee and made the major decision that we would be a club with both men and women members. The next major problem was finding a suitable place for our monthly meetings. We looked at various places and finally agreed to the Box Hill RSL. This came about through one of our new committee members, Dorothy Cook whose husband was on the committee of the RSL
Our first meeting took place on Friday July 1, 1993 at the Box Hill RSL.
Our Club Banner was produced during the 2002/3 year when Pat Fraser was President. Pat initiated the project and asked several members at the time, to help out. One member approached was the late John Crowley, (husband of Joan) to design the banner, as she knew his expertise in this area and the quality of his workmanship. Eleanor and Peter Banfield, organized the material and sewing required. John hand painted the design onto the Banner much to the delight of everyone.
The membership of the Club is limited to 120 as this is the maximum number of people that can be accommodated at our monthly meeting place. The Club endeavors to achieve an equal representation of male and female members.
We welcome applications to join our Club. However applicants should be aware that because of the popularity of our meeting place and the activities which our Club members enjoy we have a waiting list and it may be a number of months before an applicant can be admitted to the Club. Membership is restricted to residents of Mont Albert & Mont Albert North or to people that have a connection to either suburb. All new membership enquiries should be directed to the club secretary (see "Contact Us" page).
The joining fee payable by a member on admission to the club is $10.00 & the annual subscription payable by members is $65.00 and is due on the 1st April each year.
Each year at the AGM, committee members & event convenors are elected to organize activities and perform functions to enable the smooth running of the club. The positions for Club President, Secretary & Treasurer for 2013/2014 are:
Club President: Margaret Mee
Club Secretary: Lance Garraway
Club Treasurer: Bob Jeffery
The Club organizes a range of activities for members to participate in & meet new friends or continue established friendships. Please refer to the Activities page for an overview of our current range of activities. From time to time these activiies change depending on the needs and suggestions from our members.
Generally the club meets on the second Friday of each month in The Upton Room at the Box Hill RSL in Nelson Road Box Hill. The meetings start at 10.00 am and comprise brief reports on upcoming events followed by a break for morning tea. After the break we have a guest speaker that delivers a presentation on their field of interest. The topics are always interesting and can vary from travel, history, media, health etc.
The meetings finish at 12 noon and members often dine at the restaurant on the premises.
