HMAS MARYBOROUGH J195 and B248

  • Built by Walkers, Maryborough, Queensland
  • Laid down 16 April 1940
  • Launched 17 October 1940 by Mrs.A.Goldsmith, wife of the managing director of Walkers Ltd.
  • Commissioned 6 June 1941.


Senior ship of 21st Minesweeping Flotilla, based in Singapore. One of the last ships to leave Java in March 1942. Served in Indian Ocean, Persian Gulf, Mediterranean, Sicily, and later with British Pacific Fleet. Sold to Australian General Trading and Shipping Syndicate in 1947 as the "ISOBEL QUEEN." Broken up in Brisbane 1953.

HMAS MILDURA J207 and M207

  • Built by Morts Dock, Sydney, NSW
  • Laid down 23 September 1940
  • Launched 15 March 1941 by Mrs.J.Durnford, wife of the Second Member, Naval Board.
  • Commissioned 23 July 1941.


Served East Coast. Towed liberty ship "PETER H BURNETT " 400 miles to Sydney. First Allied ship to enter Hong Kong. Used as a training ship in Fremantle until 1954, then as a reserve depot ship in Brisbane. Sailed a corvette record 209,312 miles. Broken up in Brisbane 1965.

HMAS PARKES  J361 and M361

  • Built by Evans Deakin, Brisbane, Queensland
  • Laid down 16 March 1943
  • Launched 30 October 1943 by Mrs.G.Brown, wife of the President of the Senate.
  • Commissioned 25 May 1944


The last corvette commissioned. Served in Northern Australia and New Guinea. In July 1944, made a hazardous trip up Eilanden River to rescue troops. In Dili for the Japanese surrender in East Timor. Put into reserve in 1945. Was the "living ship" of the Careening Bay Reserve Fleet after the war.
Sold for scrap to Hong Kong Rolling Mills, 1957.

HMAS PIRIE  J189 and B249

  • Built by BHP, Whyalla, South Australia
  • Laid down 19 May 1941
  • Launched 3 December 1941 by Mrs.H.T.Kleeman, wife of the superintendant of BHP Whyalla.
  • Commissioned 10 October 1942.


Served mainly Northern Australia and New Guinea. Bombed off Oro Bay, April 11, 1943, with 7 crew killed. Poor leadership resulted in mutiny, with several crew gaoled. Served with British Pacific Fleet on minesweeping and anti-piracy patrols in Hong Kong area.
Sold to Turkey as "AMASRA", 1946. Served until 1984.

HMAS ROCKHAMPTON J 203 and M 203

  • Built by Walkers, Maryborough, Queensland
  • Laid down 6 November 1940
  • Launched 26 June 1941 by Mrs Walker, wife of the Chairman of Directors, Walkers Ltd
  • Commissioned 21 January 1942 under the command of Lieutenant Robert T. Salmon RANR(S).


Served East Coast convoys and New Guinea. Involved in occupation of the Celebes. Worked postwar sweeping mines around Australia and New Guinea.
Sold to Japan as scrap in 1962.

Named after Rockhampton, Queensland


HMAS SHEPPARTON J 248 and M 248

  • Built by Williamstown, Victoria
  • Laid down 14 November 1941
  • Launched 15 August 1942 by Lady Goudle, wife of Commissioner of Pubic Works, Victoria.
  • Commissioned 1 February 1943


Worked mainly as a survey ship, doing close in shore work prior to the landings at Talasea, and Humboldt Bay. Surveyed areas of the Torres Strait and Bougainville. Placed in reserve, May 1946.
Towed to Japan and scrapped by Japanese Shitako Maro for scrap in 1958.

HMAS STAWELL J 348 and M 348

  • Built by Williamstown, Victoria
  • Laid down 14 November 1942
  • Launched 3 April 1943 by Mrs.J.J.Dedman, wife of the Minister for War Organization
  • Commissioned 7 August 1943


Patrol and escort duties in Australia and New Guinea. Took part in landings in Borneo. August 1945 she sank an armed Japanese barge in the Celebes. After the war served as British liaison ship at Subic Bay, Philippines. Mine sweeping and anti-piracy work around Hong Kong.
Transferred to New Zealand Navy 1952. Used as training vessel 1955-59, then put into reserve.
Broken up for scrap in Auckland, 1968

HMAS STRAHAN J 363 and M 363

  • Built by State Dockyard, Newcastle, NSW
  • Laid down 9 December 1942
  • Launched 12 July 1943 by Mrs.J.J.Cahill, wife of the Minister for Public Works and Local Government.
  • Commissioned 14 March 1944


Convoy and patrol work around New Guinea. Sunk a Japanese barge near Tarakan, August, 1945. Swept mines with Mildura in Hong Kong prior to surrender. Damaged by a mine off China. Put in reserve after repair work.
Broken up for scrap, Green Point, Sydney in March, 1963.

HMAS TAMWORTH J181 and B 251

  • Built by Walkers, Maryborough, Queensland
  • Laid down 24 August 1941
  • Launched 14 March 1942 by Mrs.A.M.Horsburgh, wife of director of Walkers.
  • Commissioned 8 August 1942


Joined British Eastern Fleet in 1943. Served in Aden and Persian Gulf. Attacked by a German U-boat in February 1944 near Aden. Joined British Pacific Fleet in November 1944, minesweeping and anti-piracy patrols around Hong Kong. Sold to the Dutch Navy as the "TIDORE" in 1946, later named the "PATI UNIS" in the Indonesian Navy. Disposed of in 1969.

HMAS TOOWOOMBA  J 157 and M 251

  • Built by Walkers, Maryborough, Queensland
  • Laid down 6 August 1940
  • Launched 26 March 1941 by Mrs.C.W.Lowther, wife of the longest serving employee of the shipyard.
  • Commissioned 9 October 1941


Rushed to Singapore in January 1942. Survived heavy bombing with only slight damage near Java. Joined British Eastern Fleet in November 1942 and served between Madagascar, Aden and Persian Gulf. Joined British Pacific Fleet in 1944. Post war duties in Hong Kong. Sold to the Dutch Navy as "BOEROE" in 1946 and served until 1958. Final fate unknown.
